Chapter 3: The Secret Behind the Picture
I drove home so fast I barely remembered the streets.
My hands were shaking.
Not because I believed Patricia.
Because I knew her.
Patricia never did anything without a reason.
Every cruel comment.
Every little insult.
Every time she reminded me that I “came from nothing.””
There was always something underneath.
When I opened the front door, I heard voices in the living room.
Michael.
And Patricia.
“You promised me you wouldn’t tell her,” Patricia said.
I stopped.
My heart sank.
Promise?
Tell me what?
I stepped inside.
“You two were talking about me?””
They both turned.
Patricia looked uncomfortable.
Michael looked guilty.
“What secret?”” I asked.
Nobody answered.
I walked closer.
“What secret?””
Patricia stood.
“This is exactly why I didn’t want you involved.””
I stared at her.
“You cut my daughter’s hair, lied about Michael asking you to do it, and now you’re saying I shouldn’t be involved?””
Michael stepped between us.
“Sarah, calm down.””
“No.””
My voice shook.
“No, I am done being told to calm down while everyone else decides things about my daughter.””
Patricia crossed her arms.
“I found a photo.””
“What photo?””
She looked toward Michael.
Then back at me.
“The one from before your wedding.””
I frowned.
“That picture means nothing.””
Patricia smiled slightly.
And that smile scared me.
“It means everything.””
Michael looked nervous.
“Mom.””
“What?”” Patricia snapped.
“Are we pretending anymore?””
I turned to my husband.
“Pretending about what?””
He looked away.
That hurt more than anything.
“Michael.””
Finally, he spoke.
“There was a man.””
My stomach tightened.
“What man?””
“Someone from before me.””
I stared at him.
“You knew?””
He swallowed.
“I knew you had a past.””
“No. You’re talking like there’s something else.””
Patricia stepped forward.
“There is.””
I looked at her.
“Say it.””
She smiled.
“Lily may not be Michael’s daughter.””
The room went completely silent.
For a moment, I couldn’t breathe.
Then I laughed.
Not because it was funny.
Because it was impossible.
“That’s your plan?””
Patricia’s face hardened.
“It’s the truth.””
“No.””
I looked at Michael.
“Tell her.””
He didn’t.
That silence broke something inside me.
“You actually believe this?””
“I don’t know what to believe,” he said.
Those words hurt more than Patricia’s.
Because she was a person who hated me.
But he was my husband.
The man who promised to stand beside me.
I walked upstairs.
I opened the old box where I kept Lily’s baby memories.
Photos.
Hospital bracelets.
Tiny clothes.
Everything.
Then I saw it.
The picture Patricia mentioned.
A photo from seven years ago.
Me holding newborn Lily.
And standing beside me…
Was someone I hadn’t seen in years.
Someone I thought was gone forever.
My phone buzzed.
A message appeared.
Unknown number.
*You need to know what Patricia has really been doing. She was never trying to protect Michael. She was protecting herself.*
My hands went cold.
A second message appeared.
*Check the back of the picture.*
I flipped it over.
There was writing I had never seen before.
A date.
A name.
And one sentence.
*The truth about Lily was hidden because Patricia begged me to stay silent.*
I stared at the words.
Then I heard footsteps behind me.
Michael was standing in the doorway.
His face was pale.
“Sarah…”
I slowly turned around.
“What?””
He looked at the photo in my hand.
Then whispered:
“Where did you get that message?””
I looked at him.
May you like
And I realized…
He already knew who sent it.
