Chapter 12: The Night Everything Changed

I couldn’t sleep.

Not after Patricia’s call.

Not after hearing the doubt in Michael’s silence.

I sat beside the window watching the streetlights outside.

Seven years ago.

The night Lily was born.

The night everything changed.

Michael found me there.

“You’re hiding something.””

I didn’t answer.

He sat beside me.

“Sarah.””

I looked at him.

“I’m tired.””

“I know.””

“No. You don’t.””

My voice cracked.

“I spent seven years protecting everyone.””

He looked hurt.

“Even me?””

“Yes.””

That answer surprised him.

I took a deep breath.

“The night Lily was born, Ethan wasn’t the only person who came.””

Michael waited.

“Who else?””

I looked down.

“My brother.””

Michael frowned.

“You have a brother?””

I nodded.

“His name is Daniel.””

“Why don’t I know about him?””

Because nobody knew.

Because I erased that part of my life.

“Because my family fell apart before I met you.””

I told him everything.

Daniel had struggled for years.

He made mistakes.

Big mistakes.

But he was still my brother.

“When Lily was born, he came to the hospital.””

“Why?””

“To apologize.””

Michael listened.

“And Patricia saw him.””

My hands trembled.

“She used him.””

“What do you mean?””

“She told Daniel that if he wanted to fix our family, he needed to stay away.””

Michael stared.

“She threatened him too?””

“Yes.””

The pattern was impossible to ignore.

Patricia didn’t just destroy relationships.

She collected them.

Every person she controlled became another piece of her power.

The next morning, I contacted Daniel.

He answered immediately.

“Sarah?””

I almost cried hearing his voice.

“Daniel.””

A long silence.

“I thought you hated me.””

“I never hated you.””

“Patricia told me you did.””

My eyes closed.

Of course.

“She lied.””

He sighed.

“I know that now.””

We met at a quiet park.

Daniel looked older than I remembered.

“I should have fought.””

“You were scared.””

“Yes.””

He looked down.

“She told me if I came near you, she would tell you I caused problems during your pregnancy.””

I froze.

“What problems?””

He looked confused.

“She never told you?””

“No.””

Daniel pulled out his phone.

“I saved everything.””

He showed me messages.

Messages from Patricia.

Threats.

Warnings.

Lies.

Then one message stopped me.

*Sarah can never know what happened in the delivery room.*

My heart stopped.

“What happened?””

Daniel looked at me.

“I thought you knew.””

“Knew what?””

He swallowed.

“Patricia switched the paperwork.””

I felt the world tilt.

“What paperwork?””

“The original birth records.””

I stared.

“What?””

Daniel’s voice dropped.

“She changed something before you signed.””

I couldn’t breathe.

“What did she change?””

Before he could answer, my phone rang.

Rachel.

I answered immediately.

Her voice was urgent.

“Sarah, I found the original hospital records.””

My heart raced.

“About what?””

A pause.

Then she said:

“The birth certificate information.””

I gripped the phone.

“And?””

Rachel lowered her voice.

“Lily’s original file was never missing.””

I stood frozen.

“Then where is it?””

Her answer made my blood run cold.

“Patricia has had it for seven years.””

I looked at Michael.

Then at Daniel.

May you like

Because suddenly the truth wasn’t about who Lily’s father was.

It was about what Patricia changed before anyone could stop her.
