Chapter 6: The Test That Changed Everything
Nobody moved.
The envelope sat on the table between us.
Small.
Simple.
Powerful enough to destroy seven years of my life.
Michael stared at it.
“Where did you get that?””
Patricia didn’t answer.
Instead, she looked at me.
“You wanted the truth.””
I felt my heart racing.
“Open it.””
Michael looked at me.
“Sarah…”
“No.””
I looked at him.
“No more secrets.””
I reached for the envelope.
But before I touched it, Patricia smiled.
A small, satisfied smile.
And suddenly I understood.
She wanted this moment.
She wanted us fighting.
She wanted the family she controlled to fall apart.
I opened the envelope.
Inside was a DNA report.
My eyes moved across the page.
The words blurred.
Michael took it from my hand.
His face changed as he read.
Then he looked at Lily’s picture on the wall.
“Is this real?””
I looked at Patricia.
“You tell me.””
She crossed her arms.
“I warned you.””
Michael looked devastated.
“Mom…”
“I did what was necessary.””
“Necessary?””
His voice rose.
“You tested my daughter without telling Sarah?””
Patricia didn’t respond.
And that was all the answer we needed.
I grabbed the paper.
“Where did you get Lily’s sample?””
Patricia looked away.
A terrible feeling moved through me.
“No.””
She stayed silent.
“Patricia.””
Finally, she said:
“She left a toothbrush at my house.””
My stomach turned.
“You stole from my child?””
“She deserved the truth.””
“No.””
I stepped closer.
“You wanted control.””
Michael looked sick.
“I can’t believe you did this.””
Patricia looked at him.
“I did it for you.””
“No.””
He shook his head.
“You did it because you wanted to win.””
For the first time, Patricia looked hurt.
Then angry.
“You ungrateful boy.””
I almost laughed.
Even now.
Even after everything.
She still acted like the victim.
My phone suddenly rang.
It was Lily’s school.
I answered immediately.
“Hello?””
The teacher’s voice sounded worried.
“Mrs. Carter, I’m sorry to bother you, but Lily was crying during class.””
My heart broke.
“What happened?””
“She said she was scared everyone was going to leave her.””
I closed my eyes.
“Is she okay?””
There was a pause.
Then Mrs. Carter said:
“She also told me something else.””
“What?””
“She said Grandma told her she was going to make sure Mommy and Daddy stopped being a family.””
I looked at Patricia.
Her face went pale.
Michael heard it too.
The room went silent.
“Mrs. Carter,” I whispered, “thank you for telling me.””
After I hung up, Michael turned toward his mother.
“Did you say that to her?””
Patricia said nothing.
“Mom.””
She finally looked at him.
“I was angry.””
Michael stepped back.
“You scared a child.””
“She needs discipline.””
“No.””
His voice was quiet.
“No, Mom.””
I had never heard him speak to her like that.
Patricia stared at him.
“You’re choosing her?””
Michael looked at Lily’s picture.
Then at me.
Then back at his mother.
“I’m choosing my daughter.””
Patricia’s face changed.
The confidence disappeared.
But she wasn’t finished.
She grabbed her purse.
“You think this is over?””
I watched her walk toward the door.
Then she stopped.
Without turning around, she said:
“You should ask Sarah why Ethan’s name was never on Lily’s birth certificate.””
My blood ran cold.
Michael looked at me.
And suddenly…
I realized there was one secret left.
May you like
One I had never told anyone.
Not even him.
