Chapter 5: The Man Who Vanished

I couldn’t speak.

I stood in Patricia’s kitchen with the phone against my ear, unable to process what I was hearing.

Ethan.

The man I thought disappeared.

The man I believed abandoned me.

The man Patricia blamed for everything.

“Sarah?””

His voice was shaking.

“I know you probably hate me.””

I closed my eyes.

A thousand memories came rushing back.

The promises.

The late-night conversations.

The day he disappeared.

The hospital room where I held newborn Lily alone.

“You don’t get to call me after seven years and say sorry.””

“I know.””

“Do you?””

My voice became louder.

“Do you know what it was like raising her alone?””

“I know I hurt you.””

“No. You disappeared.””

There was silence.

Then he said something I never expected.

“I didn’t leave.””

I froze.

“What?””

“I was forced to.””

My grip tightened around the phone.

“Who forced you?””

He didn’t answer immediately.

And that scared me.

“Ethan.””

“Patricia.””

The name hit me like a wave.

I looked across the room.

My mother-in-law was watching me.

She looked nervous.

“You’re lying.””

“I’m not.””

“Why would Patricia make you leave?””

“Because she wanted Michael to marry you.””

My heart pounded.

“That makes no sense.””

“It will when you know everything.””

I walked outside.

I needed air.

“Where are you?””

“An hour away.””

“Why contact me now?””

His voice became softer.

“Because I found out what she did to Lily.””

I looked back through the window.

Patricia was standing there.

Watching me.

“What did she do?””

“She always wanted control. When she found out you were pregnant, she decided your life needed to change.””

My stomach tightened.

“She told me Ethan had a choice.””

“What choice?””

“She said if I stayed, she would make sure you lost everything.””

I swallowed.

“That’s impossible.””

“I thought so too.””

He continued.

“Then she showed me documents.””

“What documents?””

“She had papers claiming I was dangerous. That I had abandoned my responsibilities before. She said she would take them to court.””

I shook my head.

“She threatened you?””

“Yes.””

“And you believed her?””

“No.””

His voice cracked.

“But then she sent me a photo.””

My breathing stopped.

“What photo?””

“Your hospital room.””

I froze.

“She had someone take a picture of you holding Lily.””

I covered my mouth.

“She said if I came near you, she would destroy your life.””

I looked at Patricia.

Her expression had changed.

She knew.

She knew Ethan was telling me.

I walked back inside.

“You threatened him.””

Patricia immediately stood.

“What?””

“You threatened Ethan.””

Her face went cold.

“You spoke to him.””

I didn’t answer.

That was enough.

Michael suddenly appeared behind me.

“Mom?””

He had followed me.

Patricia looked at him.

And for the first time, I saw fear in her eyes.

“Michael, don’t listen to her.””

But Michael wasn’t looking at his mother.

He was looking at me.

Then at the phone.

“Is that him?””

I nodded.

His face changed.

“You talked to Ethan?””

“Yes.””

Patricia stepped forward.

“You need to understand what kind of person he is.””

Michael looked at her.

“Did you threaten him?””

Silence.

The question hung in the room.

“Mom?””

Patricia’s face hardened.

“I did what I had to do.””

Michael stepped back.

“What does that mean?””

She looked between us.

Then whispered:

“I protected you.””

I stared at her.

“You protected him from what?””

Patricia looked at Michael.

And said something that made my blood run cold.

“From raising another man’s daughter.””

Michael’s face went pale.

“What?””

Patricia reached into her purse.

She pulled out a small envelope.

“I have the proof.””

My hands went cold.

May you like

She placed it on the table.

“Inside is the DNA test.””
