Chapter 13: The Record She Hid
I arrived at Rachel’s office with one thought repeating in my head.
Patricia had my daughter’s original birth records.
For seven years.
I walked inside and saw the file sitting on the table.
A simple brown folder.
Something that should have belonged to me.
Something that should never have been hidden.
Rachel looked at me.
“Before you open this, I need you to understand something.””
“What?””
“Whatever is inside may change how you see the past.””
I swallowed.
“My past was already changed by someone else.””
She nodded.
Then pushed the folder toward me.
I opened it.
The first page was the original hospital record.
My hands shook as I read.
Mother: Sarah Bennett.
Child: Lily Bennett.
Father: Ethan Walker.
I stared.
Ethan’s name was there.
It had always been there.
Michael looked over my shoulder.
His face went pale.
“She removed it.””
Rachel nodded.
“She created a false copy.””
I couldn’t speak.
For seven years, I thought I had made a choice.
I thought I was the reason Ethan’s name was missing.
But Patricia had taken that choice away.
“She stole my daughter’s truth.””
Rachel continued.
“There’s more.””
She handed me another document.
A handwritten statement.
From Patricia.
My stomach turned.
“What is this?””
“A confession.””
I read the first line.
*I know what is best for this family.*
My hands tightened.
The letter continued.
*Sarah is emotional and weak. Ethan is unstable. Michael needs someone who can protect him from making mistakes.*
I felt anger burning through me.
“She wrote this about me?””
“Yes.””
Michael took the paper.
His expression changed with every sentence.
“She thought she owned us.””
Rachel nodded.
“She believed she was saving the family by controlling it.””
I looked at Michael.
“I told you.””
His eyes filled with regret.
“I know.””
For the first time, he didn’t defend her.
He didn’t explain.
He just accepted the damage.
That evening, we went home.
But the house felt different.
Not because Patricia wasn’t there.
Because her lies were gone.
Lily ran toward me.
“Mommy!””
I hugged her.
Then she looked at Michael.
“Daddy?””
He knelt.
“Yes, sweetheart?””
“Are we okay?””
His eyes filled.
“Yes.””
She looked between us.
“Promise?””
Michael held her hand.
“I promise.””
That night, we made one decision.
We would not hide the truth from Lily.
But we would protect her from the adult pain around it.
The next morning, Patricia called.
Michael answered.
I stood beside him.
“Mom.””
Her voice was calm.
“You found the records.””
It wasn’t a question.
Michael’s face hardened.
“Yes.””
“You’re angry.””
“You lied to me for years.””
“I protected you.””
“No.””
His voice shook.
“You controlled me.””
A long silence followed.
Then Patricia said:
“You think Sarah will thank you when everything falls apart?””
Michael looked at me.
“Everything already fell apart because of you.””
Patricia became quiet.
Then she whispered:
“You have no idea what I sacrificed.””
I took the phone.
“Patricia.””
She stopped.
“You hurt my daughter.””
“I was trying to help her.””
“No.””
My voice became steady.
“You were trying to hurt me.””
For once, she didn’t have an answer.
Then she said something unexpected.
“I’m sorry.””
I froze.
Michael looked at me.
But I knew.
Something was wrong.
Patricia never apologized without a reason.
Then she continued.
“But you should know something.””
My stomach tightened.
“What?””
“The original records are not the only thing I kept.””
Silence.
“What else?””
She laughed softly.
“The video.””
My blood went cold.
“What video?””
“The hospital security footage.””
Michael stepped closer.
“Mom, what are you talking about?””
Patricia’s voice lowered.
“The night Lily was born.””
The call ended.
May you like
And I knew.
There was still one final piece of the truth.
