Chapter 11: The Secret Patricia Could Not Control
I arrived at Rachel’s office within twenty minutes.
Michael drove.
Neither of us spoke.
The silence between us wasn’t empty anymore.
It was full of everything we had learned.
Every lie.
Every secret.
Every moment stolen from us.
When we entered the office, Rachel was waiting with a folder.
“Sit down.””
I looked at her.
“You said Patricia didn’t create the custody document.””
Rachel nodded.
“She didn’t.””
“Then who did?””
She opened the folder.
Inside was a name.
I read it.
Then my stomach dropped.
“Your father-in-law.””
Michael went completely still.
“My dad?””
Rachel nodded.
“He created the first draft.””
I looked at Michael.
“That’s impossible.””
Rachel shook her head.
“Listen carefully. Your father created it, but he never submitted it.””
“Why?””
“Because he discovered Patricia was manipulating the situation.””
Michael sat back.
“So my father knew.””
“Yes.””
“Then why didn’t he tell us?””
Rachel looked at the papers.
“Because he was trying to collect evidence.””
She handed Michael another document.
A handwritten note.
His father’s writing.
*Patricia believes she can control everyone. She does not understand that control leaves a trail.*
Michael’s eyes filled.
“My father knew she was dangerous.””
“Yes.””
I looked at Rachel.
“Then why did Patricia send us this document?””
Rachel pointed to another page.
“Because she wanted you to think the threat was legal.””
“What do you mean?””
“She knew you would panic when you saw a custody agreement.””
I understood.
Fear.
That was Patricia’s weapon.
“She wanted me to feel helpless.””
Rachel nodded.
“Yes.””
Michael stood.
“I need to confront her.””
“No.””
Rachel stopped him.
“Not yet.””
“Why?””
“Because people like Patricia reveal themselves when they think they are winning.””
That night, we waited.
And Patricia called.
Michael put the phone on speaker.
“Hello, Mom.””
Her voice was calm.
Almost cheerful.
“I heard you hired a lawyer.””
Michael looked at me.
“How did you know?””
Patricia laughed softly.
“Because I know everything.””
My hands tightened.
“You searched Lily’s room.””
A pause.
Then she said:
“I needed to protect myself.””
“From what?””
“From you.””
Michael’s face hardened.
“You’re threatening my wife and daughter.””
“I’m saving you from a mistake.””
“A mistake?””
Patricia’s voice became colder.
“Michael, you are raising a child who isn’t yours.””
He closed his eyes.
“She is my daughter.””
“No.””
Her answer was immediate.
“She is Sarah’s daughter.””
I felt anger rise.
Then Patricia said something worse.
“You always wanted a perfect family. I gave you one.””
Michael’s voice shook.
“You destroyed mine.””
There was silence.
Then Patricia whispered:
“You really think Sarah is innocent?””
I froze.
“What does that mean?””
Patricia laughed.
“Ask her about the night Lily was born.””
Michael looked at me.
“I already know.””
“No.””
Patricia sounded pleased.
“You don’t.””
My heart started racing.
“What are you talking about?””
Patricia said:
“The hospital has another record.””
My blood went cold.
“What record?””
“A visitor log.””
Silence.
Then she continued.
“It shows Sarah wasn’t alone when Lily was born.””
I looked at Michael.
He looked confused.
Patricia’s final words before hanging up were:
“The question is…”
A pause.
“Who was Sarah protecting?””
The call ended.
And suddenly…
I realized Patricia wasn’t finished destroying us.

She had found another secret.
One I had buried even deeper.
