Chapter 14: The Video That Exposed Her

For two days, Patricia disappeared.

No calls.

No messages.

No threats.

That frightened me more than anything.

People like Patricia didn’t become quiet because they gave up.

They became quiet because they were planning.

Rachel contacted the hospital.

The security footage was still archived.

Not because Patricia owned it.

Because the hospital kept old records for legal reasons.

When the video arrived, we watched it in Rachel’s office.

I wasn’t prepared.

The screen showed the hallway outside my hospital room.

Seven years younger.

Exhausted.

Holding newborn Lily.

Then Ethan appeared.

My heart broke seeing him.

He looked terrified.

He walked toward my door.

Then Patricia appeared.

Even on a silent video, I could see her confidence.

She stopped him.

They argued.

Then Patricia handed him something.

Ethan looked shocked.

He shook his head.

Then Patricia pointed toward my room.

After several minutes, Ethan walked away.

I covered my mouth.

“He wanted to stay.””

Rachel nodded.

“Yes.””

Michael stared at the screen.

“What did she give him?””

We watched again.

This time slower.

Then Rachel paused the video.

“There.””

On the screen was a paper.

A document.

Rachel zoomed in.

My eyes widened.

It was a fake letter.

A letter pretending to be from me.

The message was clear.

*Do not come back. Lily and I don’t need you.*

I felt tears falling.

“She forged my words.””

Michael looked devastated.

“She destroyed three lives.””

No.

I thought.

Four.

She destroyed Lily’s childhood.

A week later, we confronted Patricia.

Not alone.

Rachel was there.

So were Ethan and Michael.

Patricia entered the room confidently.

Until she saw the video playing.

Her expression changed.

“You recorded me?””

“No,” Rachel said.

“The hospital did.””

Patricia stared at the screen.

“You don’t understand.””

Michael looked at her.

“No. I understand now.””

She looked at him.

“I did everything for you.””

“You hurt everyone for yourself.””

That sentence finally broke through.

Her face twisted.

“You would have ruined your life without me.””

Michael shook his head.

“No.””

He looked at Lily’s photo.

“You ruined my life by making me believe I needed you.””

Patricia looked at me.

“You’re happy now?””

I didn’t answer.

Because I wasn’t happy.

Not yet.

But I was free.

The legal process moved quickly after that.

The forged documents.

The threats.

The hidden records.

Everything came together.

Patricia was forced to admit what she had done.

But even after everything was exposed, she still refused to apologize to Lily.

That hurt.

But it also gave me closure.

Because I finally understood.

Some people don’t lose because they are defeated.

They lose because everyone finally sees them clearly.

Months later, Lily stood in front of the mirror.

Her hair had grown back.

Not completely.

But enough.

She smiled.

“Mommy?””

“Yes?””

“Can I cut it?””

I smiled.

“Are you sure?””

She nodded.

“But I want to choose.””

I hugged her.

“Of course.””

Because that was what Patricia had taken away.

Not just hair.

May you like

A choice.

And I promised Lily nobody would ever take that from her again.
