Chapter 9: The Letter That Changed Everything
I held the letter in my hands.
Nobody moved.
Not Brandon.
Not Linda.
Not Rachel.
The entire house felt like it was waiting.
Waiting for me to uncover something that could never be hidden again.
I unfolded the paper.
The handwriting was unmistakably Brandon's.
My husband's words.
Written before I knew I needed to fear him.
I read the first sentence again.
*Emily, if you are reading this, it means I failed to stop you.*
My heart tightened.
I kept reading.
"You were always smarter than I gave you credit for.""
I looked up at Brandon.
He looked away.
"I knew one day you would find the truth. I just hoped it would be after I had everything I wanted.""
My hands shook.
Everything I wanted.
Not everything we wanted.
Everything he wanted.
I continued.
"The first time I met you, I knew you were different. Your father trusted you. Your family trusted you. Everyone saw you as someone honest.""
I swallowed.
"That was why you were useful.""
The word hit me like a punch.
Useful.
I had been his wife.
His partner.
His family.
But to him, I was a resource.
Rachel whispered:
I did.
"When I married you, I knew your father had protected certain assets. I knew I couldn't touch them while you were happy and trusting.""
My vision blurred.
"He married me for this.""
Nobody answered.
Because everyone knew.
"I needed patience. I needed you to believe I loved you.""
I lowered the letter.
"Stop.""
Brandon stepped forward.
"Emily.""
I looked at him.
"Did you write this?""
He didn't speak.
That was enough.
I kept reading.
"The problem was Vanessa.""
My eyes narrowed.
"She became emotional. She wanted more than the plan. She wanted a future with me.""
A bitter laugh escaped.
Even Vanessa had been disposable.
"I never intended to leave with her. She was only supposed to help create the evidence.""
I looked at Rachel.
She nodded slowly.
"I told you.""
I continued.
"The fake identity was supposed to make the property transfer simple. Once Emily signed the divorce papers, everything would be finished.""
I folded the paper slightly.
"Divorce papers.""
My father had been right.
This wasn't about an affair.
It was a takeover.
"But Rachel interfered.""
Rachel's expression changed.
"She always had to play the hero.""
I looked at her.
"Brandon knew she survived.""
"Yes," she said.
The letter continued.
"Now the only problem left is Emily herself.""
My stomach dropped.
"She is stronger than I expected.""
For a second, I almost felt something strange.
Not pride.
Not happiness.
Just the realization that the person who tried to destroy me had finally underestimated me.
The last paragraph was shorter.
"If you found this, Emily, I have one request.""
I kept reading.
"Don't trust anyone. Not your father. Not Rachel. Not even yourself.""
I frowned.
The final sentence was written darker.
Like he pressed the pen harder.
"Because the person who started this entire plan has been beside you the entire time.""
I looked up.
Everyone was silent.
Then Brandon said:
"Give me the letter.""
"No.""
His face changed.
"Emily.""
"No.""
I stepped back.
"You don't get to scare me anymore.""
My phone suddenly rang.
Unknown number.
Everyone looked at it.
I answered.
"Hello?""
A man's voice spoke.
"Emily Carter?""
"Who is this?""
"This is Detective Harris.""
I frowned.
"Why are you calling me?""
A pause.
Then:
"We need to talk about your husband.""
I looked at Brandon.
"What about him?""
The detective's voice became serious.
"We found evidence connecting Brandon Carter to a larger financial fraud investigation.""
My heart raced.
"How large?""
"Large enough that federal agents are involved.""
Brandon's face went pale.
I noticed.
He wasn't surprised.
He was afraid.
"Detective, what evidence did you find?""
Another pause.
Then:
"Something that was hidden in your house.""
I looked at the basement.
The box.
The documents.
The letter.
"What?""
The detective lowered his voice.
"Mrs. Carter, we found a hidden recording device.""
I froze.
"A recording device?""
"Yes.""
"Where?""
His answer made my blood run cold.
"Inside the bedroom.""
I slowly looked upstairs.
My bedroom.
The room where Brandon and Vanessa betrayed me.
The detective continued:
"And Emily...""
"Yes?""
"The recording wasn't made to expose Brandon.""
I felt my heartbeat in my ears.
"Then what was it for?""
May you like
The detective said:
"It was made to record you.""
