Chapter 7: The Secret Beneath My Home

I stared at the message on my phone.

*If you want the truth about your husband, come outside alone.*

—Rachel

Every instinct told me not to go.

Every logical thought screamed that walking outside in the middle of the night to meet someone connected to this nightmare was the worst decision I could make.

But I had spent the last forty-eight hours watching my entire life collapse.

My husband betrayed me.

My identity was stolen.

My home was almost taken from me.

And every person I trusted seemed to know more than I did.

I was tired of being the last person to know.

I grabbed my coat.

Linda grabbed my arm.

"Emily, don't.""

I looked at her.

"Why?""

She hesitated.

That hesitation told me more than words ever could.

"Because you don't know what Rachel wants.""

I pulled my arm away.

"And you do?""

Linda looked down.

For the first time, she looked ashamed.

"I know enough.""

"Then tell me.""

She said nothing.

I walked toward the door.

"That's what everyone does, isn't it?""

I opened it.

"They all know the truth. They all protect Brandon. And I just get to discover the damage afterward.""

The cold night air hit my face.

The SUV was still there.

The driver wasn't visible anymore.

I stepped onto the porch.

"Rachel?""

No answer.

I moved closer to the vehicle.

Then the passenger door opened.

Rachel stepped out.

She looked older than I remembered.

Not physically.

Emotionally.

Like someone who had spent years carrying a burden nobody else could see.

"Emily.""

I stopped a few feet away.

"You have five minutes.""

She nodded.

"Fair.""

I crossed my arms.

"Tell me why my husband destroyed my life.""

Rachel looked toward the house.

"Because he was afraid.""

I almost laughed.

"Brandon?""

"Yes.""

"The man who lied, cheated, and stole from me was afraid?""

Rachel nodded.

"Brandon has always been afraid of one thing.""

"What?""

"Being exposed.""

I waited.

She took a small folder from her bag.

"I found this two years ago.""

She handed it to me.

Inside were financial records.

Thousands of transactions.

My eyes scanned the pages.

"These are from Brandon's company.""

"Yes.""

I looked at her.

"What am I supposed to see?""

Rachel pointed to one line.

A transfer.

A large one.

Then another.

And another.

The money wasn't disappearing.

It was moving.

Into another company.

A company with no employees.

No office.

No public records.

I looked at the name.

My stomach tightened.

"Emily Carter Holdings.""

My own name.

I looked at Rachel.

"What is this?""

"Brandon created a company using your name.""

My hands went cold.

"Why?""

"Because he needed someone clean.""

I stared at the papers.

"He used me as a shield.""

"Exactly.""

The worst part wasn't the money.

It was how carefully he had done it.

Every document.

Every signature.

Every excuse.

He hadn't made one terrible decision.

He had built a machine.

And I was the cover.

"Why didn't you tell me?""

Rachel looked away.

"Because Brandon made sure I couldn't.""

"How?""

"He convinced everyone I was the thief.""

She swallowed.

"He threatened me.""

My eyes narrowed.

"With what?""

Rachel looked toward the house.

"Your husband knows how to destroy people.""

A sound came from behind us.

The front door opened.

Linda.

"Emily!""

I turned.

And in that moment, headlights appeared again.

Another car entered the driveway.

Brandon.

Rachel immediately stepped back.

"No.""

I looked at her.

"What?""

"You can't let him see this.""

I held the folder tighter.

"Why?""

"Because if Brandon knows I gave you this, he won't stop.""

My heart raced.

"He's already not stopping.""

Rachel looked at me.

"Emily, you still don't understand.""

"Understand what?""

She whispered:

"Brandon isn't trying to take your house.""

A chill moved through me.

"Then what is he trying to take?""

Before she answered, Brandon's voice came from behind me.

"Emily.""

I turned.

He stood near the porch.

His expression was controlled.

Too controlled.

Like he had practiced it.

Rachel immediately walked away.

Brandon noticed.

His face changed.

"Rachel.""

She didn't look back.

"Brandon.""

The hatred between them was obvious.

Not romantic.

Not personal.

Something deeper.

A war.

Brandon looked at the folder in my hands.

Then at me.

"What did she tell you?""

I held the papers against my chest.

"Enough.""

His jaw tightened.

"Emily, you need to give that to me.""

"No.""

He stepped forward.

"Listen to me.""

"No.""

My voice was stronger now.

"You don't get to tell me what to do anymore.""

For a moment, he looked shocked.

Then his expression changed.

The mask disappeared.

And I saw something underneath.

Panic.

"Emily, if you open that folder, you will regret it.""

I stared at him.

"Why?""

He said nothing.

Then Linda whispered from the porch:

"Because it contains the name of the person who started all of this.""

I looked at the folder.

My fingers trembled.

A name.

Someone behind Brandon.

Someone behind Vanessa.

Someone behind the fake documents.

I opened the first page.

And saw a signature at the bottom.

My blood ran cold.

Because it wasn't Brandon's.

May you like

It wasn't Vanessa's.

It was my father's.
