Chapter 3: The Secret Behind the Signature
Vanessa walked into the office slowly.
Her confidence had returned.
The same confidence she had in my bedroom.
The same confidence she had when she told me my own house would become hers.
"Well," she said, "I guess the truth came out earlier than expected.""
I stared at her.
"You planned this.""
She tilted her head.
"Planned what?""
I held up the email.
"This.""
Brandon stepped forward.
"Emily, give me that.""
I moved away.
"No.""
His jaw tightened.
For the first time in twelve years, I saw a stranger wearing my husband's face.
"You're making a mistake.""
I looked at him.
"No. My mistake was believing you.""
Vanessa crossed her arms.
"You always thought you were better than me.""
I almost smiled.
"Because I was your boss's wife?""
"No.""
She stepped closer.
"Because you had everything.""
I stared at her.
"What?""
She laughed quietly.
"You had the house. The marriage. The money. The respect.""
"And you wanted it.""
Her smile disappeared.
"I deserved it.""
Those words told me everything.
This was never just about Brandon.
It was about obsession.
Vanessa wanted my life.
Brandon looked uncomfortable.
"Vanessa, stop.""
She ignored him.
"Do you know how many times Brandon complained about you?""
I looked at him.
He didn't deny it.
My chest tightened.
"He said you cared more about your company than him.""
I whispered, "I worked because you said we needed the money.""
Brandon looked down.
Vanessa continued.
"He told me you treated him like a business partner, not a husband.""
I felt something inside me break.
Not because I believed her.
Because I realized Brandon had been collecting reasons to justify what he wanted to do.
I pointed at him.
"You could have left.""
He looked up.
"What?""
"If you were unhappy, you could have left.""
My voice became stronger.
"You didn't have to destroy me.""
For a moment, nobody spoke.
Then Brandon said quietly:
"I didn't think you would find out.""
That sentence hurt more than any confession.
Not "I'm sorry.""
Not "I regret it.""
Just:
I thought I could get away with it.
My father called while we stood there.
I answered.
"Emily?""
"I'm here.""
"Did you find anything?""
I looked at Brandon and Vanessa.
"Yes.""
My father paused.
"Then listen carefully.""
I stepped away from them.
"The police contacted me.""
My heart jumped.
"Why?""
"They reviewed the mortgage documents.""
I swallowed.
"And?""
His voice became low.
"They found something.""
"What?""
"The fake identification wasn't created last month.""
I frowned.
"What do you mean?""
"Emily, the system shows that someone requested a replacement driver's license using your information eight months ago.""
Eight months.
Before the affair was discovered.
Before the fake house transfer.
Someone had been planning this for a long time.
"Who requested it?""
My father was silent.
Then he said:
"The application was submitted from Brandon's office.""
I looked across the room.
Brandon was watching me.
And suddenly I understood.
This wasn't a sudden betrayal.
This was a business plan.
A plan where I was the only person who didn't know I was the target.
I ended the call.
"Brandon.""
He froze.
"How long?""
"What?""
"How long have you been planning to erase me?""
His face changed.
Vanessa stepped back.
For the first time, she looked nervous.
Then Brandon whispered:
"Emily, you don't understand.""
I walked closer.
"Then explain.""
He opened his mouth.
But before he could speak, his office phone rang.
Nobody moved.
The sound echoed through the room.
Brandon looked at the screen.
Then all the color disappeared from his face.
I watched him slowly pick up the phone.
"Hello?""
A woman's voice came through the speaker.
I couldn't hear every word.
Only Brandon's reaction.
"No... that's impossible.""
A pause.
Then his hand started shaking.
"What do you mean she was never supposed to be involved?""
Vanessa looked confused.
"Brandon?""
He ignored her.
The voice on the phone continued.
And then Brandon whispered the words that made Vanessa's face turn white.
"Wait...""
He looked directly at her.
"Who told you to use Emily's identity?""
Vanessa stopped breathing.
May you like
Because apparently...
she wasn't the person who created the plan.
