Chapter 4: The Person Behind the Mask

Brandon stood in the middle of his office, holding the phone like it had burned his hand.

For the first time since I discovered his betrayal, he looked genuinely terrified.

Not guilty.

Not ashamed.

Afraid.

The woman on the other end of the call kept speaking, but Brandon had gone silent.

"Who is this?"" I demanded.

He looked at me.

His eyes moved from my face to Vanessa.

Then back again.

"I need to handle this.""

I almost laughed.

"Handle this?""

I stepped closer.

"You tried to steal my house. You forged my identity. You had someone create fake documents using my name. And now you want to handle it?""

Vanessa crossed her arms.

"Brandon, don't listen to her. She's trying to confuse you.""

But her voice wasn't as confident anymore.

The woman on the phone spoke again.

This time, Brandon put it on speaker.

A calm female voice filled the room.

"Brandon Carter, you need to understand something. The investigation is already moving forward.""

My heart stopped.

Investigation.

I looked at Brandon.

"Who is she?""

He didn't answer.

The woman continued.

"You were supposed to wait until the divorce was finalized. You weren't supposed to create attention.""

Vanessa's face changed.

"Wait.""

She looked at Brandon.

"Who is that?""

The woman laughed softly.

"Vanessa, you really believed he was doing this all for you?""

The room went silent.

Vanessa took a step toward the phone.

"Who are you?""

The voice replied:

"Someone who knows exactly what Brandon is capable of.""

I watched Vanessa's confidence collapse.

For months, she had walked around believing she was the winner.

She thought she had taken my husband.

My home.

My life.

But now she looked just as confused as I was.

"Brandon," I said quietly, "who is she?""

He finally ended the call.

"No one.""

I stared at him.

"Don't insult me.""

He ran his hands through his hair.

"This isn't what you think.""

"Then tell me what it is.""

He looked toward Vanessa.

And that small movement told me everything.

He wasn't protecting himself.

He was protecting her.

Or maybe protecting the person behind her.

Vanessa stepped forward.

"You knew someone else was involved?""

Brandon said nothing.

Her expression changed.

"You knew?""

"Vanessa—"

"No.""

She shook her head.

"You told me we were going to start over.""

Brandon looked frustrated.

"Not here.""

"Not here?""

Her voice rose.

"You promised me this house.""

I watched them argue.

The two people who destroyed my marriage were suddenly turning against each other.

And somehow, that felt satisfying.

I pulled out my phone and started recording.

Brandon noticed.

"Emily, stop that.""

"Why?""

"Because you don't know what you're doing.""

I smiled coldly.

"Actually, for the first time in a year, I know exactly what I'm doing.""

I left his office before he could stop me.

Outside, I sat in my car and called my father.

"He's hiding something.""

"I know.""

"You heard?""

"Your phone automatically sent me the recording from earlier.""

I blinked.

"What?""

"Emily, after what happened last night, I installed security software on your phone.""

Normally, I would have been annoyed.

But not now.

"Did you identify the woman?""

"Not yet.""

I looked through the windshield.

Cars passed by.

People walked into buildings.

The world kept moving even though mine had completely changed.

"Dad.""

"Yes?""

"What if Brandon wasn't the person controlling everything?""

My father was quiet.

"Then we need to find who was.""

That evening, I returned home alone.

The house felt different.

The same walls.

The same furniture.

But it no longer felt like mine.

Every room carried memories that suddenly felt fake.

I walked upstairs.

The bedroom door was still open.

I couldn't bring myself to enter.

Instead, I went into my office.

A place Brandon rarely entered.

A place where I kept important documents.

I opened the locked drawer where I stored my financial records.

And immediately noticed something wrong.

The folder was missing.

My property documents.

My investment records.

Everything.

Someone had been inside.

I called my father.

"Dad.""

His voice changed immediately.

"What happened?""

"Someone took my files.""

A long pause.

Then:

"Emily, leave the house.""

"Why?""

"Because whoever did this knows you found out.""

Before I could answer, I heard a noise downstairs.

A door closing.

My blood turned cold.

I wasn't alone.

I slowly stepped into the hallway.

"Who's there?""

No answer.

Then footsteps.

Coming upstairs.

Slow.

Careful.

I reached for my phone.

The footsteps stopped outside my bedroom.

The door handle moved.

And a familiar voice whispered:

"Emily?""

I froze.

Because it wasn't Brandon.

May you like

It wasn't Vanessa.

It was someone I never expected to see.
