Chapter 6: The Original Betrayal

I stood completely still.

Rachel's words echoed through the room.

"The person Brandon wanted to destroy was you.""

I wanted to scream.

I wanted answers.

But more than anything, I wanted to understand.

Why me?

After twelve years.

After everything.

"Rachel," I said, forcing my voice to stay steady, "start talking.""

Linda immediately stepped forward.

"Emily, don't listen to her.""

I looked at my mother-in-law.

"No.""

My voice surprised even me.

"No more lies.""

Rachel was silent for a moment.

Then she said:

"Good. You're finally ready.""

I sat down.

My legs felt weak.

"What is this about?""

Rachel sighed.

"Your husband was never the victim of a failing company.""

I frowned.

"What?""

"Three years ago, Brandon's company started losing money.""

I knew that part.

He had told me the business was struggling.

He had told me he needed my support.

"He lied," Rachel continued.

"The company wasn't failing because of the market.""

My hands tightened.

"Then why?""

"Because Brandon stole from it.""

The room went silent.

I looked at Linda.

She looked away.

"You knew.""

Linda whispered:

"I found out later.""

Rachel continued.

"He moved company money into private accounts. He covered his tracks. When I discovered it, he blamed me.""

I shook my head.

"No.""

I remembered.

Two years ago, Brandon told me Rachel had betrayed him.

He said she had tried to ruin his business.

He made me hate her.

I never questioned it.

Because I trusted him.

Rachel said quietly:

"He destroyed my reputation.""

My voice softened.

"What happened?""

"He made everyone believe I was responsible for the missing money.""

"And you disappeared.""

"Because I was trying to survive.""

I looked at my phone.

"So why come back now?""

Rachel answered immediately.

"Because Brandon made one mistake.""

"What?""

"He underestimated you.""

I didn't understand.

Rachel continued:

"He thought you would be too heartbroken to fight.""

A bitter smile crossed my face.

"He knows me better than that.""

"No," Rachel said.

"He knows the woman he created in his head.""

The sentence stayed with me.

Because it was true.

Brandon thought I was just the wife who would cry and forgive.

The woman who would protect his reputation.

The woman who would stay silent.

He didn't know this version of me.

The one who had finally seen him clearly.

"Where is Vanessa in all of this?""

Rachel laughed softly.

"Vanessa was just a tool.""

I looked toward Linda.

"She thinks she won.""

"She thinks Brandon chose her.""

Rachel paused.

"But Brandon never planned to give her anything.""

My eyes widened.

"What?""

"He needed someone young, emotional, and easy to manipulate.""

I felt sick.

"Vanessa believed he loved her.""

"Brandon tells everyone what they need to hear.""

I looked at the documents on the bed.

The fake identity.

The mortgage.

The stolen files.

A plan years in the making.

Then I remembered something.

"The house.""

Rachel became quiet.

"What about it?""

"Why this house?""

A long pause.

Then Rachel said:

"Because your father helped you buy it.""

I froze.

"What does that have to do with anything?""

"Emily, your house isn't just valuable because of the property.""

My heart started beating faster.

"What are you saying?""

Rachel lowered her voice.

"There is something hidden in the original ownership records.""

I stood up.

"What?""

"Something Brandon has been searching for.""

I looked at Linda.

She looked terrified.

"Linda.""

She said nothing.

"Why does he want my house?""

Nobody answered.

Then Rachel said:

"Because your father didn't just help you buy a home.""

My fingers tightened around the phone.

"He protected something.""

"What?""

Rachel whispered:

"Evidence.""

The room went silent.

"Evidence of what?""

Before Rachel could answer, the call suddenly cut off.

I looked at my phone.

No signal.

Then I heard something outside.

A car door slammed.

Linda rushed toward the window.

Her face went pale.

"What?""

She whispered:

"He's here.""

I moved beside her.

Outside, headlights illuminated the driveway.

A black SUV was parked near the house.

The driver's door opened.

A man stepped out.

I couldn't see his face.

But Linda knew exactly who it was.

Because she whispered:

"Brandon wasn't supposed to come back tonight.""

And then my phone received one final message.

From an unknown number.
