Chapter 2: The Woman Wearing My Identity

I didn't sleep that night.

Not because I was heartbroken.

Not anymore.

Heartbreak was what you felt when someone accidentally hurt you.

What Brandon did was something else.

It was calculated.

At 3:00 a.m., I sat at the kitchen table surrounded by documents my father had emailed me.

Property records.

Mortgage papers.

Bank statements.

Every page felt like another piece of my marriage turning into evidence against him.

Brandon had gone to a hotel with Vanessa.

At least that was what he claimed.

I knew better.

A man who could fake his wife's signature could fake anything.

At sunrise, my father arrived.

Richard Carter was seventy years old, but he still walked into every room like he owned it.

He placed a folder on the table.

"Emily.""

I looked up.

"I should have noticed.""

He shook his head.

"No. The person who should have protected you was your husband.""

I looked down.

"I trusted him.""

My father sat beside me.

"Trusting someone is not a mistake. Betraying that trust is.""

He opened the folder.

"I called a forensic document expert this morning.""

My eyebrows lifted.

"You already did that?""

"I know my daughter.""

Inside were copies of the documents.

The expert had highlighted differences between my real signature and the fake one.

The curves.

The pressure marks.

The writing pattern.

Someone had practiced my name.

Someone had studied me.

A cold feeling moved through my chest.

"This wasn't random.""

My father nodded.

"No.""

"She wanted to become me.""

Before he could answer, my phone rang.

Brandon.

I stared at his name.

My father watched me.

"Are you going to answer?""

I pressed the speaker button.

"What do you want?""

His voice sounded exhausted.

"Emily, we need to talk.""

"About the affair?""

"No.""

A pause.

"About the house.""

I laughed bitterly.

"Of course.""

"You're misunderstanding.""

"Am I?""

"Vanessa made mistakes.""

My eyes narrowed.

"Your girlfriend forged my identity.""

"She didn't mean for things to go this far.""

I stood up.

"Things went this far because you let them.""

Silence.

Then Brandon said something I never expected.

"Emily, if you fight this, both of us could lose everything.""

I looked at my father.

"What does that mean?""

"It means the loan is already active.""

"So?""

"So if the bank takes action, the house could be sold.""

I felt my anger rise.

"You used my house as collateral.""

"I was trying to protect us.""

I almost laughed.

"Protect us?""

My voice shook.

"You were buying a future with another woman.""

Brandon lowered his voice.

"Emily, please. Don't turn this into a war.""

I looked at the documents on the table.

"Brandon, you started the war the day you signed my name.""

He hung up.

My father looked at me.

"There's something else.""

"What?""

He handed me another paper.

"This came from the mortgage company.""

I read the name listed on the loan.

Borrower: Brandon Carter.

Witness: Vanessa Reed.

Notary: Melissa Grant.

My eyes stopped.

"Wait.""

"What?""

I pointed.

"Melissa Grant.""

My father nodded.

"You know her?""

I did.

Melissa was the receptionist at Brandon's office.

The woman who always avoided eye contact with me.

The woman who suddenly quit three months ago.

"This isn't just Vanessa.""

My father became serious.

"What are you saying?""

I stared at the names.

"She had help.""

That afternoon, I went to Brandon's office.

I didn't tell him I was coming.

I wanted answers.

The receptionist looked terrified when she saw me.

"Mrs. Carter?""

I walked past her.

Inside Brandon's office, his desk was covered with papers.

Then I saw it.

A framed photo.

Not of me.

Not of our family.

A picture of Brandon and Vanessa at a beach resort.

The same resort he told me was a business conference.

I picked it up.

Behind the frame was an envelope.

Inside was a copy of an email.

The sender was Brandon.

The recipient was Vanessa.

The subject line made my blood run cold.

*"The Final Step.""*

I opened it.

The message was short.

"Once Emily signs the transfer papers, everything belongs to us.""

My hands trembled.

I kept reading.

"We just need the fake ID approved, then she won't be able to stop us.""

A sound came from behind me.

I turned.

Brandon stood in the doorway.

His face was pale.

He knew.

He knew I had found it.

"What are you doing here?"" he asked.

I held up the email.

"What exactly was the final step, Brandon?""

He didn't answer.

Then his eyes moved toward the hallway.

Toward someone standing behind him.

Vanessa.

May you like

And she wasn't scared.

She was smiling.
