Chapter 11: The Family Secret

Linda didn't run.

She didn't deny it.

She just stood there.

Like she knew the moment had finally arrived.

I held the note in my hand.

"The second plan.""

Her face went pale.

"Emily.""

"How long?""

She looked away.

"How long have you known about this?""

"I didn't know about the note.""

"But you knew about the plan.""

Silence.

That was enough.

I walked toward her.

"Tell me everything.""

She sat down slowly.

For the first time since I had known her, she looked old.

Not physically.

Emotionally.

Like years of secrets had finally become too heavy.

"Brandon came to me three years ago.""

I crossed my arms.

"Before we had problems?""

She nodded.

"He was desperate.""

"Because of the company.""

"Yes.""

I waited.

"He told me he made mistakes.""

"Mistakes.""

She looked ashamed.

"He had debts.""

"How much?""

"Millions.""

The number didn't surprise me anymore.

Nothing surprised me.

"What did he want?""

Linda took a deep breath.

"He wanted access to your family's assets.""

My heart tightened.

"Why?""

"Because your father built protections around everything you inherited.""

I remembered.

My father always told me:

"Never let anyone control what belongs to you.""

At the time, I thought it was just advice.

Now I understood.

"He knew Brandon was dangerous.""

Linda nodded.

"Your father warned me.""

I stared.

"What?""

"He told me Brandon was becoming obsessed with money.""

My anger rose.

"And you still helped him?""

Her eyes filled with tears.

"I was afraid.""

"Of what?""

"He threatened me.""

I waited.

"He said if I didn't help, he would expose my financial problems.""

I looked at her.

"So you chose yourself.""

She looked down.

"Yes.""

The honesty hurt more than another lie.

I stepped away.

"What is my inheritance?""

Linda hesitated.

"Your grandfather left something behind.""

"My grandfather?""

She nodded.

"A trust.""

I frowned.

"I knew about the trust.""

"No.""

She shook her head.

"You knew about the money.""

She looked at me.

"But not the company shares.""

I froze.

"What shares?""

Linda whispered:

"Your grandfather owned part of a private investment group.""

My mind raced.

"And?""

"And when he died, those shares went to you.""

I laughed.

"That's impossible.""

"My father would have told me.""

"He couldn't.""

"Why?""

"Because your grandfather's will had a condition.""

I stared at her.

"What condition?""

"That you had to be married for ten years before full ownership transferred.""

My blood ran cold.

I understood.

Twelve years of marriage.

Ten-year condition.

Brandon didn't just want my house.

He had been waiting.

Waiting for the inheritance to unlock.

"He married me because of the trust.""

Linda nodded.

The room spun slightly.

All those years.

Every anniversary.

Every promise.

Every "I love you.""

A performance.

Then my phone buzzed.

A message from Detective Harris.

*We found the original trust documents.*

I opened it.

Attached was a scanned page.

My eyes moved down.

Then stopped.

There was a handwritten addition.

A note my grandfather added before his death.

I read it aloud.

"If Emily's husband attempts to access these assets through deception, the inheritance will be transferred to the Carter Family Foundation.""

I looked up.

Brandon's entire plan depended on taking my inheritance.

But he had failed.

Because my grandfather saw this possibility.

Then another message appeared.

From Detective Harris.

*Mrs. Carter, there is one more thing.*

I opened it.

*The person who attempted to access the trust was not Brandon.*

My heart stopped.

I looked at Linda.

Then at the doorway.

Brandon was standing there.

His expression was unreadable.

"Who was it?""

Detective Harris replied:

*The request was submitted under your name.*

I frowned.

"My name?""

Then another message came.

*Someone has been impersonating Emily Carter for months.*

I looked at Brandon.

Then Linda.

And suddenly, the truth became even more terrifying.

Because someone wasn't trying to steal my life.

Someone was already living it.
