Chapter 8: The Father’s Hidden Promise
I couldn't move.
The signature stared back at me.
Richard Carter.
My father.
The man who raised me.
The man who taught me to trust my instincts.
The man who had spent the last two days helping me uncover my husband's betrayal.
My hands shook.
"No.""
The word escaped before I could stop it.
Brandon watched me carefully.
"Now you understand.""
I looked up.
"Understand what?""
His voice was cold.
"That everyone has been lying to you.""
I hated that part of me almost believed him.
Because that was his talent.
He didn't just lie.
He made you question the truth.
I turned the page.
There were more documents.
Contracts.
Transfers.
Legal agreements.
And my father's signature appeared again.
Rachel stood near the driveway.
She looked at me with sadness.
"Emily, you need to know the whole story.""
I looked at her.
"Then tell me.""
She took a breath.
"Your father and Brandon made an agreement.""
My stomach dropped.
"What agreement?""
"Years ago, before you married Brandon.""
I looked at Brandon.
He didn't deny it.
"You knew my father before me.""
He nodded.
"We worked together.""
My voice became quieter.
"You never told me.""
"I didn't think it mattered.""
I laughed.
"You didn't think it mattered that my husband had business deals with my father?""
Brandon looked away.
Rachel continued.
"Your father invested in Brandon's company.""
I looked at the papers.
"And?""
"And the investment came with conditions.""
"What conditions?""
Rachel hesitated.
Then said:
"That Brandon could never access certain assets.""
My eyes moved toward the house.
"This house.""
Rachel nodded.
"Your father protected it.""
I frowned.
"Why?""
"Because he knew Brandon.""
The words hit harder than expected.
My father knew.
Maybe not everything.
But enough.
I grabbed my phone and called him.
He answered immediately.
"Emily.""
His voice sounded tired.
"Dad.""
A pause.
"I know.""
I closed my eyes.
"You knew.""
"Yes.""
The anger came quickly.
"You knew Brandon was dangerous?""
"I knew he had problems.""
"Problems?""
My voice cracked.
"You let me marry him.""
"I thought he changed.""
That hurt.
Because my father sounded broken.
Not defensive.
Broken.
"I was wrong.""
I looked at Brandon.
He was watching me.
"Why didn't you tell me?""
"Because I didn't want to destroy your marriage based on suspicion.""
I looked down.
"Instead, I discovered it after he tried to destroy me.""
Silence.
Then my father said:
"Emily, there is something you need to know.""
"What?""
"The house wasn't the only thing I protected.""
My heart raced.
"What else?""
"The original company records.""
I frowned.
"What records?""
"The evidence that proves Brandon stole from his own business.""
I looked at Rachel.
She nodded.
"Dad...""
"Brandon thought he found them.""
"But?""
"But he didn't.""
I looked around the house.
"Where are they?""
My father was quiet.
Then:
"Emily, remember when I gave you the house keys before your wedding?""
I frowned.
"Yes.""
"I told you the house would always protect you.""
I remembered.
At the time, I thought it was just something sentimental.
A father's way of comforting his daughter.
But now...
"What did you mean?""
My father answered:
"The records are hidden inside the house.""
I froze.
Brandon suddenly stepped forward.
"Your father is lying.""
Everyone looked at him.
His expression had changed.
Not anger.
Fear.
Rachel whispered:
"He knows.""
I looked at Brandon.
"You know where they are.""
He didn't answer.
"Brandon.""
He looked away.
And that was enough.
I turned toward the house.
"Where?""
Nobody spoke.
Then Linda quietly said:
"The basement.""
I looked at her.
"You knew too?""
Her eyes filled with tears.
"I knew there was something hidden.""
"Why didn't you tell me?""
"Because Brandon threatened me.""
I stared at her.
"For years, he controlled everyone.""
I walked toward the basement door.
Behind me, Brandon's voice became urgent.
"Emily, don't.""
I stopped.
"Why?""
"Because once you open that door...""
He swallowed.
"There's no going back.""
I smiled sadly.
"Brandon.""
I turned around.
"That happened when I found your secretary in my bed.""
I opened the basement door.
The smell of old wood and dust filled the air.
I turned on the light.
At first, I saw nothing.
Then I noticed something strange.
A section of the wall looked newer than the rest.
I stepped closer.
My heart pounded.
There was a small metal lock.
And carved into the wood beside it were four words.
Words written by my father.
*For Emily. Trust yourself.*
I reached for the lock.
Then Brandon shouted:
"Emily, stop!""
I turned.
He looked terrified.
Because he knew what was inside.
I opened the lock.
And found a small box.
Inside was a letter.
A letter addressed to me.
But the handwriting wasn't my father's.
It was Brandon's.
May you like
The first line made my blood run cold.
*Emily, if you are reading this, it means I failed to stop you.*
