Chapter 9: The Truth Hidden in the Records

Vanessa left that night.

Not because she was angry.

Because she was afraid.

I watched her drive away through the front window, wondering how many years I had spent loving someone I never truly knew.

The next morning, my lawyer arrived with documents.

Real documents.

Not accusations.

Not rumors.

Evidence.

He placed a folder on my kitchen table.

“We found records from the original custody case.””

Tyler sat beside me.

Lily was coloring in the living room with a babysitter I trusted.

I opened the folder.

The first page was a court report.

The second was a police statement.

The third was something that made me stop breathing.

A witness statement.

From Vanessa’s former neighbor.

My lawyer looked at me.

“Read it.””

I did.

The statement said Vanessa had left Emma alone multiple times.

Not once.

Multiple times.

The neighbor had reported concerns.

Michael had filed for custody.

And then Vanessa disappeared with Emma.

But the next page was worse.

A transfer record.

A child services document.

A name.

Emma Vanessa Reed.

Transferred into temporary care.

I looked up.

“She lost custody?””

My lawyer nodded.

“For a period of time.””

Tyler covered his face.

“My whole childhood…”

He couldn’t finish.

I looked at him.

“I’m sorry.””

He shook his head.

“I believed her.””

“So did I.””

That was the hardest part.

We both had.

The front door opened.

I turned.

Rachel walked in.

She was holding a small envelope.

“I found something.””

She placed it on the table.

“What is it?””

“A letter from Emma.””

My heart stopped.

“Emma wrote this?””

Rachel nodded.

“She wrote it years ago.””

I opened it carefully.

The handwriting was messy.

Childlike.

The first line broke me.

*Dear Mommy, I don’t know why you left me.*

I stopped reading.

Tyler looked away.

I continued.

*I tried to be good. I cleaned my room. I didn’t cry. I waited for you.*

My hands shook.

Then I reached the last sentence.

*If you ever come back, I hope you remember my name.*

Nobody spoke.

Lily walked into the room holding her coloring book.

“Daddy?””

I quickly folded the letter.

“What is it, sweetheart?””

She looked at Rachel.

“Is Emma still alive?””

Rachel’s face softened.

“Yes.””

“Can I meet her?””

The question surprised everyone.

Even me.

Rachel smiled sadly.

“I think she would like that.””

That afternoon, we found out where Emma was.

She wasn’t missing.

She wasn’t gone.

She had simply grown up far away from the woman who gave birth to her.

Her name was Emma.

She was sixteen now.

And she had spent years believing her mother chose everyone else over her.

When we finally spoke to her through a video call, she looked nervous.

She looked at me.

Then at Tyler.

Then at Lily.

“I don’t understand why you’re contacting me.””

I swallowed.

“Because you deserve the truth.””

She was quiet.

Then she asked:

“Is my mother there?””

I hesitated.

“No.””

Her expression changed.

Relief.

Pain.

Both.

“I knew she wouldn’t come.””

Those words hurt.

Because Emma wasn’t angry.

She sounded like someone who had already accepted being forgotten.

Before the call ended, she said something that stayed with me.

“Can I ask you something?””

“Of course.””

She looked at Lily.

“Does she love her?””

I looked at my daughter.

The little girl who had been washing dishes while others ate.

I didn’t answer immediately.

Because I wanted to be honest.

“I don’t know.””

Emma nodded.

“I didn’t either.””

After the call, I sat alone in the kitchen.

The same kitchen where I had found Lily.

The same sink.

The same chair.

But now I understood something.

Vanessa didn’t suddenly become cruel.

She had been hiding pieces of herself for years.

Pieces that hurt everyone around her.

Then my phone buzzed.

A message.

From Vanessa.

I opened it.

There was only one sentence.

*You think you found the truth, but you still don’t know why I left Emma.*

A second message appeared.

A photograph.

I opened it.

And my blood turned cold.

Because in the picture was Vanessa.

Holding baby Emma.

And standing beside her was someone I recognized.

May you like

Someone who had been in my life the entire time.

My own brother.
