Chapter 2: The Secret Behind the Locked Door

“Because what, Lily?””

My daughter didn’t answer.

She just held onto me tighter.

Vanessa’s face changed.

For the first time all night, she looked nervous.

“Lily,” she said sharply, “don’t make up stories.””

I turned toward her.

“Don’t.””

One word.

But my voice made her stop.

I carried Lily into the living room and sat on the couch with her in my lap. She was still trembling. I could feel every little shake moving through her body.

Tyler stood near the kitchen entrance.

He looked like he wanted to disappear.

“Tyler,” I said.

He looked up.

“Did you know about this?””

His eyes moved toward his mother.

Then back to me.

“I knew she made Lily do chores.””

“That’s not what I asked.””

He rubbed his hands together nervously.

“I didn’t know it was this bad.””

Vanessa crossed her arms.

“Seriously? You’re questioning my son now?””

I ignored her.

“Tyler.””

He looked down.

“She told me not to say anything.””

My jaw tightened.

“Who?””

“Mom.””

Vanessa’s voice rose.

“Because I knew you’d overreact!””

I stood.

“Overreact?””

I pointed toward the kitchen.

“My six-year-old daughter was crying while washing dishes for people who were eating dinner.””

“She spilled juice on the carpet last week,” Vanessa said.

“She needs consequences.””

“Consequences are taking away a toy. They are not withholding food.””

Vanessa rolled her eyes.

“She’s too sensitive because you baby her.””

That sentence hurt more than I expected.

Because suddenly I realized something.

This wasn’t about one bad night.

This was about what happened when I wasn’t there.

I looked at Lily.

“Sweetheart, can you tell Daddy what happens every night?””

She looked terrified.

I lowered my voice.

“You’re safe. Nobody is going to hurt you.””

Her fingers twisted into my shirt.

“After dinner…”

She paused.

“Mom sends me upstairs.””

“Why?””

“To clean the bathroom.””

I stared.

“The bathroom?””

Lily nodded.

“She says I make messes, so I have to clean them.””

My hands went cold.

“She makes you clean the bathroom by yourself?””

“She gives me the little brush.””

Tyler suddenly spoke.

“She does.””

Everyone looked at him.

Vanessa’s face hardened.

“Tyler.””

But he continued.

“She made Lily scrub the bathtub last week.””

My heart felt like it was being crushed.

“She’s six.””

“I know,” Tyler whispered.

Vanessa stepped toward him.

“Stop acting like you’re some hero.””

Tyler flinched.

And I noticed.

A small reaction.

A familiar one.

Like he was used to being afraid of her anger.

I looked at him carefully.

“Has she done this to you too?””

He didn’t answer.

That silence was enough.

Vanessa laughed.

“This is ridiculous.””

She grabbed her purse from the counter.

“I’m not standing here while you accuse me in my own house.””

“Our house,” I corrected.

She stopped.

For a moment, neither of us moved.

Then she said quietly, “You have no idea what you’re doing.””

I looked at Lily.

“Yes, I do.””

Vanessa walked toward the front door.

“Where are you going?””

“To cool off.””

“You’re leaving?””

She looked back.

“You already decided I’m the villain.””

Then she walked out.

The door slammed.

Lily jumped.

I held her tighter.

“It’s okay.””

But deep down, I knew something was very wrong.

Later that night, after Lily finally fell asleep in my room, I walked through the house.

I looked at everything differently.

The locked cabinet under the stairs.

The chore chart on the refrigerator.

The notes written in Vanessa’s handwriting.

Then I saw something taped behind the kitchen calendar.

A small piece of paper.

At first, I thought it was another grocery list.

But when I pulled it down, I saw my daughter’s name.

Written over and over.

Next to dates.

Next to times.

Next to words that made my hands start shaking.

“Punishment.””

“Bathroom.””

“Alone.””

And at the bottom was one sentence I couldn’t understand.

Because it wasn’t written by Vanessa.

It was written in Lily’s handwriting.

“I’m sorry, Daddy. I tried to be good.””

May you like

I turned the paper over.

And on the back was a message that made my blood run cold.
