Chapter 4: The Room Behind the Laundry Wall

The key felt heavier than it should have.

I held it between my fingers, staring at the small brass piece hanging beside the laundry shelves.

For a few seconds, nobody moved.

Lily stood behind me with her stuffed rabbit pressed against her chest. Tyler was frozen beside her, his eyes locked on the door.

Nobody wanted to be the first person to find out what was waiting on the other side.

But I already knew one thing.

A mother who had nothing to hide didn’t put a lock on a room and write “Do not enter.””

I inserted the key.

The lock clicked.

Lily flinched.

I looked back at her.

“Sweetheart, do you want to wait in the living room?””

She shook her head.

“No.””

“Are you sure?””

Her eyes filled with fear, but she nodded.

“I want to know.””

That answer hurt.

A six-year-old shouldn’t have to be brave like that.

I turned the handle.

The door opened slowly.

The first thing I noticed was the smell.

Dust.

Old cardboard.

Something stale, like a room that had been closed for years.

I reached for the light switch.

Nothing happened.

Tyler grabbed his phone and turned on the flashlight.

The beam moved across the room.

And then we saw everything.

Boxes.

Dozens of them.

Each one had a name written on it.

Lily.

Tyler.

Me.

I stepped inside.

My heartbeat became louder with every step.

“What is this?”” Tyler whispered.

I didn’t answer.

I couldn’t.

Because the boxes weren’t filled with toys or memories.

They were filled with things that made my stomach twist.

Lily’s drawings.

Her school papers.

Her favorite pink sweater.

A broken bracelet she wore every day last year.

A photograph of her first birthday.

Things I thought were safely stored away.

Things Vanessa had taken.

“Daddy?””

I turned.

Lily was staring at a shelf.

A shelf filled with pictures.

But not normal pictures.

Pictures of her.

Standing in corners.

Sitting alone at the table.

Cleaning.

Crying.

My hands curled into fists.

“Why would someone take pictures like this?””

Tyler didn’t answer.

He walked closer to another box.

Then he stopped.

His face went pale.

“What?””

He slowly pulled out a notebook.

“My mom’s.””

I took it from him.

The cover was plain black.

Inside were pages of handwriting.

Schedules.

Rules.

Lists.

I read the first page.

*Lily’s Daily Requirements.*

My chest tightened.

Wake up.

Make bed.

Clean room.

No complaining.

No crying.

No asking for extra food.

I turned the page.

The rules became worse.

No interrupting adults.

No asking why.

No telling Daddy.

That last sentence had been underlined.

I looked at Tyler.

“She wrote this?””

He nodded slowly.

“She always kept notebooks.””

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

His eyes dropped.

“Because she made me feel like it was normal.””

That sentence stayed with me.

Because that was how people like Vanessa worked.

They didn’t always start with something obviously cruel.

They made you question whether you were allowed to be hurt.

I turned more pages.

Then I found something that made my entire body go cold.

A calendar.

Dates circled.

Next to each date were notes.

*Lily cried today.*

*Lily refused punishment.*

*Tyler defended her.*

*Need stricter rules.*

I looked at the last entry.

It was dated three days before my business trip.

*When he leaves, everything will improve.*

My vision blurred.

She had planned this.

Not a mistake.

Not a bad day.

A plan.

“Dad.””

Tyler’s voice shook.

I looked up.

He was holding a small envelope.

“What is it?””

He opened it carefully.

Inside were papers.

Official-looking papers.

He handed them to me.

I read the first line.

And my blood ran cold.

It was a custody agreement.

But it wasn’t for me.

It was between Vanessa and someone else.

Someone I had never heard of.

“Who is Michael?”” I asked.

Tyler looked confused.

“I don’t know.””

I stared at the papers.

A man’s name.

A signature.

A date.

A date from before Vanessa and I met.

Then I heard something.

A sound from outside.

A car door closing.

Lily grabbed my hand.

“Daddy…”

I looked toward the window.

A shadow moved across the curtain.

Someone was standing outside.

And then my phone started ringing.

May you like

The caller ID made my heart stop.

*Vanessa.*
