Chapter 10: The Man in the Photograph
I stared at the picture until the words on the screen blurred.
My brother.
Daniel.
Standing beside Vanessa.
Holding a baby Emma.
For a moment, my brain refused to accept what my eyes were seeing.
Daniel had been the person I called when I needed advice.
The person who helped me move into my first house.
The person who stood beside me at my wedding.
And now he was in a photograph connected to the biggest secret of my life.
“Daddy?””
Lily’s voice pulled me back.
I quickly locked my phone.
“Hey, sweetheart.””
She looked at my face.
“You’re sad.””
I forced a smile.
“I’m just thinking.””
She tilted her head.
“About Mommy?””
I didn’t answer.
Because the truth was, I was thinking about everyone.
Vanessa.
Daniel.
Tyler.
Emma.
And all the years where people around me had known pieces of the truth while I lived inside a lie.
I waited until Lily was asleep before calling Daniel.
He answered on the third ring.
“Hey, man. Everything okay?””
I didn’t say anything.
The silence immediately changed his tone.
“What happened?””
I sent him the picture.
A few seconds passed.
Then I heard him exhale.
“Where did you get that?””
My stomach dropped.
“You know what it is.””
Another silence.
“Daniel.””
He sighed.
“I was hoping you’d never find out.””
Those words hurt more than a confession.
Because they meant he had known.
“How long?””
“Listen—”
“How long have you known about Vanessa’s daughter?””
“Since before you met her.””
I closed my eyes.
My grip tightened around the phone.
“You knew.””
“Yes.””
“You knew she had another child.””
“Yes.””
“And you never told me?””
Daniel’s voice became quiet.
“It wasn’t my secret to tell.””
I stood from the couch.
“She was about to leave my daughter alone somewhere.””
“That’s not what happened.””
My heart stopped.
“What?””
“You don’t know the whole story.””
I laughed bitterly.
“That’s what everyone keeps saying.””
“Because it’s true.””
I walked toward the kitchen window.
“Then tell me.””
Daniel didn’t answer.
“Tell me why you’re in a picture holding Emma.””
Finally, he spoke.
“Because I was there when everything happened.””
My chest tightened.
“Where?””
“With Vanessa.””
“Why?””
A long pause.
Then he said:
“Because Emma is my daughter.””
The world stopped.
I couldn’t hear anything.
Not the refrigerator.
Not the traffic outside.
Nothing.
“What did you say?””
Daniel’s voice cracked.
“She’s mine.””
I sat down slowly.
“No.””
“I didn’t know at first.””
“You’re lying.””
“I wish I was.””
I closed my eyes.
My own brother.
My own family.
“What does that mean?””
Daniel swallowed.
“Vanessa and I were together before you met her.””
My hands started shaking.
“You dated my wife?””
“It was before she was your wife.””
“And Emma?””
“She was born after we broke up.””
I couldn’t breathe.
“Did Vanessa know?””
“Yes.””
“Did you?””
“Yes.””
The anger came suddenly.
Not loud.
Not explosive.
Just heavy.
“You let me marry her.””
Daniel’s voice broke.
“I made mistakes.””
“You let me raise a child while you knew?””
“I loved Emma.””
“And then what?””
Silence.
“What happened?””
Daniel whispered:
“Vanessa told me if I ever tried to take Emma away, she would make sure I never saw either of you again.””
I froze.
“Either of us?””
“She threatened to tell you everything in a way that made me look like the villain.””
I looked at the photo again.
“How did she lose Emma?””
Daniel hesitated.
“She didn’t lose Emma.””
My stomach turned.
“What?””
“She gave her up.””
I felt sick.
“She told everyone Emma was abandoned because it was easier.””
“Why?””
“Because she didn’t want anyone to know she couldn’t handle being a mother.””
I sat there for a long time.
Then I asked the question I was afraid to ask.
“Why didn’t you tell me after I married her?””
Daniel was silent.
Then:
“Because I was afraid you would hate me.””
I laughed once.
A broken sound.
“I do.””
The line went quiet.
But then Daniel said something that changed everything.
“There’s something else you need to know.””
“What?””
“Vanessa didn’t send you that picture to hurt you.””
“Then why?””
“Because she’s scared.””
“Of what?””
Daniel lowered his voice.
“Because the person who helped her hide Emma all these years is coming back.””
I stood.
“Who?””
Before he answered, there was a knock at my front door.
I froze.
“Daniel?””
No response.
“Who is coming back?””
His voice became almost a whisper.
“Her father.””
The knock came again.
Harder.
I walked toward the door.
And when I looked through the window, I saw a man standing outside.
A man I had never met.
May you like
But Daniel’s warning echoed in my head.
Her father.
