Chapter 8: The Memory Lily Buried
The room went silent.
Lily’s face changed.
Not confusion.
Fear.
A kind of fear that didn’t belong on a child’s face.
I turned toward her.
“Lily?””
She looked down.
“Sweetheart, what did Mommy mean?””
Vanessa watched her.
Waiting.
Almost like she wanted Lily to break.
I stepped between them.
“Don’t look at her like that.””
Vanessa laughed quietly.
“See? You always protect her.””
“Yes.””
“Even when you don’t know the truth?””
My hands curled into fists.
“Leave.””
She didn’t move.
“You really think I’m the only one with secrets?””
Tyler looked at her.
“What are you talking about?””
Vanessa ignored him.
She stared at Lily.
“Tell him.””
Lily started crying.
“Daddy…”
I immediately picked her up.
“You don’t have to say anything.””
But she grabbed my shirt.
“No.””
Her voice was small.
“I want to.””
I sat on the couch with her.
Vanessa stood across the room.
Watching.
Waiting.
“What happened, sweetheart?””
Lily wiped her tears.
“When you went on your last trip.””
I frowned.
“My last trip?””
She nodded.
“Mommy said we were going somewhere.””
My heart stopped.
“Where?””
“I don’t know.””
“When?””
Lily looked at Vanessa.
“The night you called.””
Vanessa’s face changed.
“Lily.””
I looked at her.
“Don’t.””
My daughter continued.
“She put my clothes in a bag.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“She said we had to leave.””
“Leave where?””
“She said Daddy wouldn’t understand.””
I looked at Vanessa.
She didn’t deny it.
“Then what happened?””
Lily hugged my neck.
“She took me to the car.””
Tyler whispered:
“Mom…”
Nobody listened.
“She drove for a long time.””
“Did you know where you were going?””
Lily shook her head.
“I was scared.””
My heart broke.
“What happened next?””
“She stopped.””
“Where?””
“Near a park.””
Vanessa finally spoke.
“She’s confused.””
I turned.
“You were going to leave her.””
“No.””
“You packed her things.””
“I was angry.””
“Angry enough to take my daughter somewhere without telling me?””
Vanessa looked away.
That was an answer.
Lily continued.
“She told me to wait.””
My voice became quiet.
“How long?””
“I don’t know.””
She started crying harder.
“She said she was coming back.””
I held her tighter.
“And?””
“She didn’t.””
The room went still.
Tyler looked horrified.
“How did she get home?””
Lily whispered:
“A lady found me.””
I looked at Vanessa.
“A lady?””
She said nothing.
I looked back at Lily.
“Who was she?””
“I don’t know.””
“Did she call Daddy?””
Lily shook her head.
“She called Mommy.””
My blood ran cold.
“She called Vanessa?””
Lily nodded.
“She came back.””
I stared at my wife.
“You left her somewhere and came back later?””
Vanessa finally snapped.
“I was overwhelmed!””
The words exploded from her.
Everyone froze.
“I had too much pressure!””
I stood.
“Pressure?””
“Yes!””
She pointed at me.
“You were always working. Tyler was difficult. Lily was emotional. I couldn’t handle everything!””
I stared at her.
“You abandoned a six-year-old child.””
“I came back!””
“That doesn’t erase it.””
Vanessa’s eyes filled with anger.
“You have no idea what it’s like.””
“No,” I said.
“I know exactly what it’s like.””
I looked at Lily.
“It’s like being a child and wondering why the person who is supposed to protect you walked away.””
Vanessa went quiet.
Then her phone rang.
She looked at the screen.
And for the first time, fear appeared on her face.
She answered.
“Hello?””
A voice came through.
I couldn’t hear everything.
But I heard one sentence.
“Vanessa, they found the old records.””
Her expression changed.
“What records?””
The person on the other end said something.
Then Vanessa dropped the phone.
I stepped closer.
“What records?””
She looked at me.
May you like
And whispered:
“The ones that prove Emma was never abandoned.””
