Chapter 11: The Man Who Knew Vanessa First
I didn’t open the door.
Not immediately.
The man outside waited patiently.
That somehow scared me more.
Angry people knocked harder.
Desperate people yelled.
This man simply stood there.
Like he knew eventually I would let him in.
My phone rang.
Daniel.
I answered without taking my eyes off the stranger.
“Is that him?””
Daniel was silent.
“Yes.””
“Who is he?””
“Vanessa’s father.””
I felt a chill.
“Why is he here?””
“I don’t know.””
That answer bothered me.
Daniel knew too much to not know anything.
The man outside lifted his hand and knocked one more time.
Then he spoke through the door.
“I know you’re there.””
His voice was calm.
“My name is Richard.””
I didn’t move.
“I need to talk to you about Vanessa.””
I looked toward Lily’s bedroom.
She was sleeping.
Safe.
That was all that mattered.
I opened the door slightly.
Richard looked older than I expected.
Gray hair.
Tired eyes.
A face that looked like it carried years of regret.
“You’re her husband.””
It wasn’t a question.
“Yes.””
He looked inside.
“Is Lily here?””
My body immediately tensed.
“Why?””
Richard looked down.
“Because I need to apologize.””
“For what?””
His eyes moved to mine.
“For not stopping her sooner.””
I stepped outside and closed the door behind me.
“You knew?””
He nodded.
“Knew what?””
“Everything.””
The word hit me.
“Everything?””
Richard looked toward the street.
“Vanessa was my daughter. I spent years making excuses for her.””
My jaw tightened.
“People always seem to have excuses for her.””
He didn’t argue.
“She was difficult even as a child.””
I almost laughed.
“You’re telling me she was born this way?””
“No.””
His answer surprised me.
“She wasn’t.””
He looked at me.
“She learned it.””
I waited.
“From me.””
The admission caught me off guard.
Richard continued.
“I taught her that control meant strength.””
He looked ashamed.
“I taught her that admitting mistakes meant weakness.””
I crossed my arms.
“And now?””
“Now I’m trying to fix what I helped create.””
I thought about Lily.
The bruises.
The fear.
The locked room.
“Why now?””
Richard reached into his coat.
He pulled out a folder.
“Because Vanessa knows I have this.””
I took it.
Inside were old documents.
Photos.
Records.
A custody agreement.
I looked at the first page.
Emma’s name.
Then another name.
Daniel.
My head lifted.
“What is this?””
Richard looked away.
“Proof that Vanessa lied.””
I flipped through the papers.
There were records showing Vanessa had hidden Daniel’s involvement.
Letters.
Messages.
Even a signed statement.
“She threatened you too?””
Richard nodded.
“She threatened everyone who challenged her.””
I stared at him.
“Why didn’t you stop her?””
His face changed.
A painful expression.
“Because I was ashamed.””
That answer was honest.
And somehow that made it worse.
The door behind me opened.
I turned.
Tyler stood there.
“Who is he?””
Richard looked at him.
And his face fell.
“Tyler.””
Tyler froze.
“How do you know my name?””
Richard looked at him with sadness.
“Because I knew your father.””
The air changed.
Tyler stepped forward.
“What does that mean?””
Richard looked at me.
Then at him.
“Your father didn’t disappear.””
Tyler stopped breathing.
“What?””
“He was trying to expose Vanessa.””
Tyler’s face went pale.
“Where is he?””
Richard didn’t answer.
And that silence told us everything.
“Where is he?”” Tyler repeated.
Richard looked down.
“He’s been alive this entire time.””
Nobody spoke.
Then my phone buzzed.
A message from Vanessa.
Only five words.
*You finally met my father.*
May you like
A second message appeared.
*Now ask him what he did to Emma.*
