Chapter 5: The Call That Changed Everything

I stared at Vanessa’s name flashing on my phone.

Nobody spoke.

The room felt smaller.

Tyler looked at me.

“Are you going to answer?””

I didn’t know.

Part of me wanted to ignore her.

Another part needed answers.

I pressed the button.

“Hello?””

For a few seconds, there was only silence.

Then Vanessa spoke.

“You opened the room.””

Her voice wasn’t angry.

That scared me more.

“How did you know?””

“You always were curious.””

I looked at Lily.

She was watching me carefully.

“Where are you?””

Another pause.

“I’m giving you time to calm down.””

My jaw tightened.

“You hurt our daughter.””

“No.””

The speed of her answer shocked me.

“No, I disciplined her.””

I closed my eyes.

“There is a difference.””

“Yes,” she replied.

“There is.””

I could hear her breathing.

“You think you know everything because you walked in at the worst possible moment.””

“The worst possible moment?””

“Yes.””

Her voice became sharper.

“You don’t know what she’s like when you’re not around.””

I looked at Lily.

The little girl who was afraid to speak.

The little girl who apologized while sleeping.

“You’re right,” I said quietly.

Vanessa paused.

“You’re right that I don’t know everything.””

I looked around the hidden room.

“But I’m starting to.””

Silence.

Then Vanessa said something I never expected.

“Ask Tyler about his father.””

My eyes moved toward him.

“What does that mean?””

“You think I’m the only one hiding things?””

Tyler stepped closer.

“Dad?””

I ignored Vanessa.

“What are you talking about?””

“You should ask your stepson why he never told you the truth.””

The call ended.

I stared at the phone.

For a moment, I wondered if she was trying to distract me.

Then I looked at Tyler.

His face told me she wasn’t.

“What truth?””

He looked away.

“Tyler.””

His shoulders dropped.

“My dad didn’t just die.””

The room went silent.

“What?””

He swallowed.

“He disappeared first.””

I didn’t understand.

“Your mother told me he passed away.””

“She told everyone that.””

I stared at him.

“Then what happened?””

Tyler sat down on the floor.

“I was thirteen.””

His voice was quiet.

“My dad found out Mom was controlling everything. He wanted to leave.””

I listened.

“He said he was going to take me with him.””

My heart sank.

“What happened?””

Tyler looked toward the hallway.

“Mom stopped him.””

“How?””

He shook his head.

“I don’t know exactly.””

The uncertainty in his voice bothered me.

“But after that night, Dad was gone.””

I sat down slowly.

“Tyler, this is serious.””

“I know.””

“Why didn’t you tell anyone?””

“Because Mom showed me messages.””

“What messages?””

“She said Dad abandoned us.””

He looked at the notebook in my hand.

“But now I think…”

He stopped.

“What?””

“I think she wanted me to believe that.””

Before I could respond, Lily spoke.

“Daddy.””

I turned toward her.

“What is it?””

She pointed at another box.

“That’s Mommy’s favorite one.””

I walked over.

The box was smaller than the others.

No name.

No label.

I opened it.

Inside was a collection of letters.

Old letters.

The first one was addressed to Vanessa.

I unfolded it.

And read the opening sentence.

*Vanessa, if you are reading this, it means I finally found someone who will listen.*

I looked at the signature.

My fingers went numb.

Because I recognized the name.

Michael.

The man from the custody papers.

Tyler’s father.

I read the next line.

*Your mother told everyone I left willingly. That is not true.*

My heart pounded.

I looked at Tyler.

He looked terrified.

Then Lily pointed to the bottom of the letter.

“Daddy…”

Her voice trembled.

“There’s a picture.””

I pulled it out.

A photograph fell onto the floor.

Three people stood in front of a house.

Michael.

A younger Vanessa.

And a little girl.

Not Lily.

Not anyone I recognized.

I turned the picture over.

There was writing on the back.

A date.

May you like

And one sentence.

*The daughter she never told anyone about.*
