Chapter 14: The Truth About My Marriage

I drove to my lawyer’s office alone.

I didn’t tell Tyler.

I didn’t tell Lily.

I couldn’t.

Not until I knew.

The entire drive, I kept thinking about the same question.

What else had Vanessa hidden?

When I arrived, my lawyer was already waiting.

He placed a folder on the desk.

“This came from financial records.””

I opened it.

The first page was a bank statement.

Vanessa’s name.

Large transfers.

Payments.

I looked confused.

“What am I seeing?””

“She had another account.””

“Okay.””

“An account she opened before your wedding.””

I flipped through the pages.

Money moving.

Different dates.

Different amounts.

Then I saw something.

A payment.

To a private investigator.

My stomach tightened.

“Why would she hire an investigator?””

My lawyer didn’t answer immediately.

That told me enough.

“Who was she investigating?””

He handed me another page.

My name was at the top.

I stared.

“She investigated me?””

“Yes.””

“Before we married?””

“Yes.””

The room felt colder.

“How long?””

“Six months.””

I looked through the documents.

She had investigated my finances.

My job.

My family.

My background.

My relationship history.

I felt sick.

“She didn’t love me.””

My lawyer looked at me carefully.

“I can’t tell you what she felt.””

He was right.

But I knew what it felt like.

Like the entire foundation of my life had shifted.

Then I found something else.

A note.

Written by Vanessa.

I read it.

*He’s stable. He has a good career. He wants a family.*

My hands froze.

There was more.

*This could work.*

Could work.

Not “I love him.””

Not “I found someone.””

A plan.

A possibility.

An arrangement.

I closed my eyes.

My lawyer spoke quietly.

“There’s more.””

I looked up.

“What?””

“She also knew about Daniel before your wedding.””

Of course she did.

Another secret.

“She knew he was your brother.””

“Yes.””

“And she still married me.””

“Yes.””

I leaned back.

The anger I expected wasn’t there.

Only exhaustion.

I had spent weeks being angry.

Now I was just tired.

When I got home, Tyler was sitting outside.

He looked at my face.

“What happened?””

I sat beside him.

“She investigated me before we married.””

He nodded slowly.

“I’m not surprised.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

“She always planned everything.””

That sentence hurt.

Because he was right.

Tyler had grown up seeing this.

I had only started.

“What are you going to do?””

I looked toward the house.

At the place where Lily was drawing at the kitchen table.

“I’m going to protect her.””

Tyler nodded.

“Good.””

A few days later, the custody hearing began.

Vanessa appeared different.

No designer clothes.

No confidence.

No arguments.

She sat quietly.

When the judge asked her about the allegations, she didn’t deny everything.

She admitted enough.

“I made choices I regret.””

The words sounded small compared to the damage.

But they were the first real accountability I had seen.

After the hearing, she asked to speak with me.

I almost said no.

But I agreed.

We stood outside the courthouse.

“I know you’ll never forgive me.””

I looked at her.

“I don’t know.””

She looked surprised.

“I don’t?””

“No.””

I looked toward the building.

“Because forgiveness isn’t something I can force.””

She nodded.

“I understand.””

Then she reached into her bag.

She handed me a letter.

“What is this?””

“From Emma.””

I looked at it.

“She wrote another one.””

“Why are you giving it to me?””

Vanessa looked away.

“Because she’s coming.””

My heart stopped.

“Coming where?””

“Here.””

“When?””

Vanessa swallowed.

“Tomorrow.””

I looked at the envelope.

After years of secrets.

May you like

After years of waiting.

The daughter everyone forgot was finally coming home.
