Chapter 8: The Fall Of Vanessa Cole
The emergency board meeting began at noon.
This time, nobody looked at me like I was emotional.
Nobody whispered that I was a wife fighting over a husband.
They looked at me like the person who held the future of the company.
Vanessa entered five minutes late.
She walked confidently.
But I noticed something.
She looked at Daniel before sitting down.
Not lovingly.
Not proudly.
Like she was checking whether he was still useful.
Daniel noticed too.
His face fell.
The chairman opened the meeting.
“We are here to discuss the ownership concerns raised by Mrs. Whitmore.””
Vanessa immediately interrupted.
“These accusations are personal.””
I opened my folder.
“No.””
I looked around the table.
“They are business.””
Rachel connected her laptop to the screen.
The first email appeared.
The room became silent.
Vanessa’s expression changed.
Then another email appeared.
Then another.
Private conversations.
Plans.
Strategies.
Everything.
One board member leaned forward.
“Ms. Cole, did you discuss removing Claire Whitmore from control without shareholder approval?””
Vanessa stayed calm.
“Those messages are being taken out of context.””
I almost smiled.
Everyone always said that when the truth became uncomfortable.
Rachel changed the screen.
A recording appeared.
Vanessa’s own voice filled the room.
“I don’t need Claire’s signature forever. I only need her gone long enough.””
Nobody spoke.
Daniel looked at her.
“You said that?””
Vanessa looked at him.
For a moment, she looked irritated.
Then she laughed.
That laugh was the moment Daniel finally understood.
“You’re shocked?””
His face changed.
“Vanessa…”
She turned toward him.
“Please don’t pretend you’re innocent.””
The room went quiet.
“You knew exactly what you were doing.””
Daniel stared.
“I loved you.””
Vanessa rolled her eyes.
“No.””
She leaned back.
“You loved the version of yourself you became around me.””
The words destroyed him.
Because they were cruel.
And because part of him knew they were true.
The chairman looked at Vanessa.
“You used company resources for personal control.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“You’re making a mistake.””
I finally spoke.
“No.””
Everyone looked at me.
“You made the mistake.””
I stood.
“You thought I was the wife standing outside the glass doors holding flowers.””
I paused.
“But I was also the person who built the company behind those doors.””
Nobody moved.
The vote began.
One by one, the board members raised their hands.
When the final vote was counted, Vanessa had lost control.
She stood immediately.
“This isn’t over.””
Security entered.
Not because I asked.
Because the board had decided.
As she walked past me, she whispered:
“You think this makes you safe?””
I looked at her.
“No.””
Her smile returned.
“Good.””
I watched her leave.
That night, Daniel came to my house again.
But this time, he didn’t knock with anger.
He knocked with regret.
I opened the door.
Not because I wanted him inside.
Because I wanted closure.
He looked exhausted.
“I lost everything.””
I stared at him.
“No.””
He looked confused.
“You lost what you thought you owned.””
His eyes filled.
“I’m sorry.””
I believed he meant it.
But apologies couldn’t rebuild trust.
“I loved you, Daniel.””
A tear fell down his face.
“I know.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“You knew after you lost me.””
Silence.
Then he handed me an envelope.
“What is this?””
“Something you need to see.””
I opened it.
Inside was one document.
A transfer agreement.
But it wasn’t from Vanessa.
It wasn’t from Ethan.
It was signed by Daniel.
I looked at him.
“What did you do?””
He whispered:
“I found out what Vanessa and Ethan were really planning.””
My heart tightened.
“What?””
He looked away.
“They weren’t trying to steal Whitmore Dynamics.””
May you like
A pause.
“They were trying to destroy it.””
