Chapter 7: The Name Hidden In The Contract
The name on the first page made my entire body go cold.
Ethan Cole.
I looked at Olivia.
Then back at the document.
“That’s impossible.””
Olivia lowered her eyes.
“I thought so too.””
I grabbed the folder from her hands.
The papers inside were copies of emails, financial agreements, and private meeting notes.
The more I read, the less I recognized the man I had married.
Vanessa’s plan was never about Daniel.
Daniel was a piece on the board.
A useful piece.
A man desperate enough to believe he was becoming powerful.
The first document showed a conversation between Vanessa and her brother.
*Ethan: Daniel is only temporary.*
*Vanessa: I know. He thinks he’s the final choice.*
My fingers tightened.
Temporary.
That was the word that kept repeating.
Daniel wasn’t her future.
He was her shortcut.
I looked at Olivia.
“How long have you known?””
She sat down slowly.
“Three months.””
“And you said nothing?””
Her face filled with guilt.
“I tried.””
I stared at her.
“To who?””
“Daniel.””
That surprised me.
“You warned him?””
She nodded.
“I told him Vanessa was using him.””
A bitter smile crossed my face.
“And he didn’t believe you.””
Olivia shook her head.
“He said he finally found someone who understood him.””
I almost laughed.
Not because it was funny.
Because it was tragic.
Daniel spent years wanting to feel important.
Vanessa gave him exactly that feeling.
Until she didn’t need him anymore.
I turned another page.
Then I saw something that made my heart race.
A meeting date.
Tomorrow.
The location was a private office downtown.
The attendees?
Vanessa.
Ethan.
Several investors.
And Daniel.
I looked at Olivia.
“What happens tomorrow?””
She hesitated.
“They’re planning the final move.””
“What final move?””
She swallowed.
“They want Daniel to transfer his remaining shares to Vanessa.””
I frowned.
“Remaining shares?””
Olivia nodded.
“Daniel owns a small percentage personally. Vanessa promised him a larger role after the merger.””
I stared at the documents.
He was willing to destroy our marriage…
For a promise Vanessa never intended to keep.
My phone suddenly rang.
Daniel.
I answered.
“What?””
There was panic in his voice.
“Claire, where are you?””
“Why?””
“Because Vanessa is not answering my calls.””
I almost smiled.
“You finally noticed?””
“Claire, listen to me.””
“No.””
I walked toward the window.
“You listen.””
My voice was calm.
“She never loved you.””
Silence.
Then:
“What did you say?””
I looked at the folder.
“She never planned a future with you.””
Daniel’s breathing changed.
“Who told you?””
I didn’t answer.
Because I wanted him to feel the uncertainty I had felt.
“Daniel, how many times did you ask yourself why Vanessa suddenly appeared?””
“Claire…”
“How many times did you question why she needed you?””
He said nothing.
That silence told me enough.
He was starting to understand.
“I have to go.””
“Wait.””
I paused.
For the first time in days, his voice sounded afraid.
“Please.””
That one word almost broke something inside me.
Not because I forgave him.
Because I remembered the man he used to be.
But memories couldn’t erase choices.
“I’ll talk to you after the board meeting.””
I ended the call.
The next morning, I arrived at Whitmore Dynamics before anyone else.
The building was quiet.
Almost peaceful.
I walked through the lobby.
The same place where Daniel kissed Vanessa.
The same place where I stood holding roses.
But this time, I wasn’t carrying flowers.
I was carrying evidence.
At nine o’clock, the elevator doors opened.
Vanessa walked out.
She stopped when she saw me.
Her expression changed.
Not fear.
Annoyance.
“You really don’t know when to quit.””
I smiled slightly.
“No.””
I looked at her.
“But you don’t know when to stop lying.””
Her eyes narrowed.
“You think Olivia saved you?””
“No.””
I stepped closer.
“I think Olivia saved herself.””
For the first time, Vanessa looked uncertain.
Then she whispered:
“You have no idea what Ethan is capable of.””
I held her gaze.
“Maybe.””
I lifted the folder.
“But now I know what you are capable of.””
Her face changed.
And I knew.
May you like
She understood.
The game had changed.
