Chapter 13: The Last Betrayal

The recording ended.

But nobody moved.

The silence afterward felt heavier than anything I had heard before.

I looked at Daniel.

Not Richard.

Not Vanessa.

Daniel.

Because my father’s final words weren’t about Richard.

They were about him.

“What did you do?””

My voice was quiet.

But everyone heard it.

Daniel looked down.

“I was going to tell you.””

I felt something inside me break again.

That sentence.

The same excuse.

Always later.

Always after the damage was done.

“Tell me what?””

He closed his eyes.

“When we were first starting the company…”

He stopped.

Rachel watched him carefully.

“Keep going.””

Daniel took a deep breath.

“My father pressured me to sign an agreement.””

I stared.

“What agreement?””

“A document giving him access to certain company decisions.””

Emily shook her head.

“That wasn’t the worst part.””

Daniel looked at her.

She continued.

“He also transferred confidential information to Richard.””

My heart sank.

“Information about what?””

Daniel’s voice became smaller.

“Your father’s research.””

The room went completely still.

For years, I thought my husband betrayed me recently.

I was wrong.

The betrayal started before we even built our life together.

“You stole from my father?””

Daniel immediately shook his head.

“No.””

“Then explain.””

He looked at me.

“I thought I was helping.””

I almost laughed.

“Helping who?””

He looked ashamed.

“My father convinced me the company would fail without him.””

I stared at him.

“So you gave him access?””

“Yes.””

“Without telling me?””

“Yes.””

The honesty hurt more than another lie.

I walked toward the window.

Outside, the city was still moving.

People were going to work.

Buying coffee.

Living normal lives.

Meanwhile, my entire history was being rewritten.

Emily opened another file.

“Daniel did something else.””

I looked back.

“What?””

She placed a document on the table.

“This.””

I read it.

My eyes widened.

It was a transfer agreement.

But this one was different.

The date was years ago.

The signature belonged to Daniel.

And underneath it was a handwritten note.

*I return all rights and control to Claire Whitmore.*

I looked at him.

“What is this?””

Daniel swallowed.

“When I realized what my father wanted…”

He paused.

“I tried to fix it.””

“By yourself?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

His eyes filled.

“Because I was ashamed.””

I shook my head.

“That’s your problem, Daniel.””

He looked at me.

“You always protect your shame before protecting me.””

The words hit him.

Because they were true.

Then my phone rang.

Rachel answered first.

It was the legal team.

The lawsuit hearing had been moved up.

Richard wanted an emergency injunction.

He wanted to freeze the company.

He wanted control before anyone could expose him.

Emily looked at the documents.

“He knows we have the recording.””

“How?””

Nobody answered.

Then we heard a sound outside.

Cars.

Multiple cars.

Rachel looked through the window.

“He’s here.””

I walked to the front door.

Richard Whitmore stood outside.

Older than the man in the wedding photograph.

But his eyes were exactly the same.

Cold.

Calculating.

The door opened.

Security stood between us.

Richard smiled.

“Claire.””

I stared at him.

“You ruined my wedding day.””

He looked confused.

“What?””

“You were there.””

A small smile appeared.

“Yes.””

The answer shocked me.

“I wanted to see what kind of woman my son chose.””

I stepped closer.

“And?””

His expression hardened.

“You were always a problem.””

Daniel moved forward.

“Dad.””

Richard looked at him.

“You disappointed me.””

Daniel froze.

“You chose her.””

I looked at Richard.

“No.””

My voice was steady.

“He chose himself.””

Richard smiled slightly.

“Still defending him?””

I looked at Daniel.

Then back at Richard.

“No.””

I lifted the documents.

“I’m defending the truth.””

For the first time, Richard looked uncertain.

Because he realized something.

He wasn’t fighting a wife anymore.

He was fighting the person who owned everything he wanted.

And tomorrow morning…

The world was going to hear the truth.
