Chapter 4: The Boardroom War
The Whitmore Dynamics boardroom had always felt like my second home.
I remembered choosing the wooden table myself.
I remembered arguing with architects about the lighting because Daniel said investors needed to feel confidence the moment they entered.
I remembered sitting in that exact chair when we secured our first major contract.
Back then, Daniel squeezed my hand beneath the table and whispered, “We did it.””
Funny how quickly people forget the person sitting beside them.
The next morning, I walked into that same room alone.
Everyone stopped talking.
The executives looked uncomfortable.
Some avoided eye contact.
Others stared at me like they were seeing a stranger.
Vanessa stood at the end of the table.
She looked calm.
Almost amused.
“Claire,” she said.
“I didn’t expect you to attend.””
I placed my folder on the table.
“Then you made your first mistake.””
A few people shifted in their seats.
Daniel sat beside Vanessa.
He looked different.
Not confident.
Not victorious.
Nervous.
The chairman cleared his throat.
“Let’s begin.””
Vanessa opened a document.
“As everyone knows, Whitmore Dynamics has entered a new phase. For the company to continue growing, we need stable leadership.””
I looked at her.
“Interesting.””
She smiled.
“What?””
“You’re talking about stability while trying to remove the person who owns most of the company.””
The room went silent.
Vanessa’s expression tightened.
“Ownership does not always equal leadership.””
“Correct.””
I opened my folder.
“But ownership does give someone the right to ask questions.””
I placed a stack of papers on the table.
The first document showed financial transfers.
The second showed private consulting payments.
The third showed an agreement between Vanessa’s investment group and several board members.
The chairman leaned forward.
“What is this?””
I looked directly at Vanessa.
“Exactly what I was wondering.””
Her smile disappeared.
Daniel shifted.
“Claire, this isn’t necessary.””
I turned toward him.
“Funny.””
My voice stayed calm.
“You didn’t think my involvement was necessary yesterday when you announced your engagement.””
Nobody spoke.
Vanessa leaned forward.
“You’re emotional.””
That was the mistake.
She thought emotion meant weakness.
I closed the folder.
“No, Vanessa.””
I looked around the room.
“I’m prepared.””
Rachel entered through the door.
Everyone turned.
She placed a small envelope in front of the chairman.
“Additional evidence regarding corporate decision-making.””
Vanessa’s face changed.
“What is that?””
Rachel answered calmly.
“Records of communications between Mr. Whitmore and Ms. Cole regarding attempts to restructure ownership.””
Daniel immediately stood.
“Rachel, this is inappropriate.””
She looked at him.
“Is it?””
He froze.
Because everyone in the room understood.
There was something he didn’t want revealed.
The chairman opened the envelope.
He read silently.
Then his expression hardened.
“Daniel.””
Daniel swallowed.
“Yes?””
“Did you discuss transferring company control without informing Claire?””
Silence.
Daniel looked at Vanessa.
Then at me.
“I was trying to protect the company.””
I almost smiled.
“From me?””
He didn’t answer.
That was enough.
The meeting continued for another hour.
Questions became accusations.
Accusations became explanations.
By the end, Vanessa had lost control of the room.
But she wasn’t defeated.
I could see it in her eyes.
She was angry.
Not embarrassed.
Angry.
As everyone left, she stopped beside me.
“You think you won?””
I looked at her.
“No.””
She seemed surprised.
“I think I discovered the truth.””
She stepped closer.
“You have no idea what you’re dealing with.””
I held her gaze.
“Then explain.””
Her lips curved slightly.
“Ask your husband why he was desperate to marry me.””
I watched her walk away.
That sentence stayed in my mind.
Not because I believed her.
Because I knew Vanessa.
She didn’t make threats unless she had something hidden.
That evening, I returned home.
A single envelope was waiting on my kitchen counter.
No name.
No address.
Inside was one photograph.
Daniel.
Vanessa.
And another man I had never seen before.
May you like
On the back of the photo were six words.
“Your husband has another secret.””
