Chapter 11: The Memory I Lost
I stared at the photograph until my eyes hurt.
“That’s fake.””
Daniel looked at me.
“Claire…”
“No.””
I pointed at the image.
“I never met your father alone.””
Rachel studied the picture.
“The photo looks real.””
I shook my head.
“I would remember.””
But a strange feeling started forming.
A small crack in my certainty.
Because there was one thing I couldn’t explain.
The dress.
The location.
The flowers.
Everything matched my wedding day.
Except the moment.
The next morning, Rachel contacted a forensic specialist.
The answer came back within hours.
The photo was authentic.
Not edited.
Not altered.
I sat silently.
Daniel sat across from me.
“What happened that day?””
He looked down.
“I don’t know.””
I studied his face.
“Did your father talk to me?””
He hesitated.
Then:
“Yes.””
My chest tightened.
“When?””
“Before the ceremony.””
I stood.
“You knew?””
“I knew he wanted to talk to you.””
“And you never told me?””
“I thought it was harmless.””
I stared at him.
“Daniel.””
His eyes filled with regret.
“How many secrets have you kept from me?””
He had no answer.
That was becoming his pattern.
Rachel placed another file on the table.
“We found the original wedding records.””
I opened it.
Inside was a signed document.
My name.
Daniel’s name.
And Richard’s signature.
I read the title.
“Founders Agreement Amendment.””
My hands went cold.
“What is this?””
Rachel explained.
“Before your wedding, Richard tried to create a legal structure that would give Daniel control over company decisions.””
I looked at Daniel.
“But I never signed this.””
“No.””
Rachel pointed.
“Because someone stopped it.””
I looked at the signature.
Not mine.
Not Daniel’s.
Someone had written a note beside it.
*Claire must remain protected.*
I looked up.
“Who wrote this?””
Rachel turned the page.
There was another name.
My father.
I froze.
“My father?””
Daniel looked surprised too.
I had never told Daniel much about my father.
He died before the company became successful.
But he had always believed one thing.
That I should never let anyone convince me my work mattered less.
Rachel continued.
“Your father knew Richard was trying to gain control.””
I felt tears forming.
“My father knew?””
She nodded.
“He created safeguards that protected your ownership.””
For years, I thought my father had left me only memories.
I was wrong.
He had left me protection.
A final message appeared on my phone.
Another unknown number.
*Now you understand why Richard wants those documents.*
Then another message.
*He doesn’t want your company.*
A pause.
*He wants what your father hid inside it.*
Daniel read the message.
“What does that mean?””
I looked at the old documents.
The answer was somewhere inside them.
But before we could search, the lights in my house went out.
Every single one.
The security alarm screamed.
Rachel stood.
“Everyone stay still.””
Then we heard it.
A sound from upstairs.
A door opening.
Daniel whispered:
“Someone is inside.””
I grabbed the nearest object.
We moved slowly.
The hallway was dark.
Then a figure appeared at the top of the stairs.
Not Richard.
Not Vanessa.
Someone younger.
Someone I recognized.
The person looked at me and said:
“Claire, your father told me to find you if this ever happened.””
I couldn’t speak.
May you like
Because I knew that voice.
It belonged to someone who was supposed to be gone forever.
