Chapter 6: The Marriage Contract
I sat on the basement floor surrounded by boxes.
The world around me felt strangely quiet.
Like everything had paused.
For ten years, I thought my marriage was built on love.
Now I was staring at proof that someone had been building an exit plan.
Against me.
I read the document again.
The agreement wasn’t a normal business contract.
It was a marriage arrangement.
A hidden agreement between Daniel and an investor group.
The purpose?
Gain access to my ownership stake.
I turned the pages faster.
There were signatures.
Dates.
Lawyer confirmations.
Everything carefully prepared.
Except one thing.
My signature was missing.
Daniel had never convinced me.
He had manipulated me.
My phone rang.
Daniel.
I stared at his name.
Then answered.
“Claire.””
His voice sounded tired.
“Please don’t do this.””
I laughed quietly.
“Do what?””
“Destroy everything we built.””
I looked around the room.
“You mean everything I built?””
Silence.
“Claire…”
“No.””
My voice hardened.
“Tell me the truth.””
He stopped.
“About what?””
“The documents.””
Another silence.
Longer this time.
And that silence confirmed everything.
“You knew.””
His breathing changed.
“Claire, listen.””
“No.””
I stood.
“You listen.””
My hand tightened around the papers.
“You spent ten years pretending to love me while preparing to take what was mine.””
“That’s not what happened.””
“Then explain.””
He couldn’t.
Because there was no explanation that would make betrayal acceptable.
Finally, he whispered:
“I was afraid.””
I froze.
“Afraid of what?””
“That one day you would realize you didn’t need me.””
I closed my eyes.
The truth was almost worse than the lie.
Daniel didn’t betray me because I failed him.
He betrayed me because he was insecure beside me.
“You know what hurts most?””
“What?””
“I would have given you everything if you had asked.””
His voice cracked.
“I know.””
“No, Daniel.””
I looked at the papers.
“You don’t.””
I ended the call.
That evening, Rachel discovered something else.
She arrived with a laptop.
“Claire, I found the original files.””
I looked at her.
“What files?””
“The company restructuring plan.””
She opened the screen.
There were hundreds of emails.
Most between Daniel and Vanessa.
But one message stood out.
It was sent six months earlier.
Before the engagement.
Before the betrayal.
The subject line was simple.
“Final takeover.””
I opened it.
The first sentence made my hands go cold.
“Once Claire is removed emotionally, she will be easier to control financially.””
I closed my eyes.
Emotionally.
That was their plan.
Break me first.
Then take everything.
Rachel watched me carefully.
“What are you going to do?””
I looked toward the city lights outside my window.
A week ago, I was planning a romantic trip to Paris.
Now I was preparing for war.
“I’m going back to the board.””
Rachel nodded.
“With what strategy?””
I looked at the documents.
“With the truth.””
The next morning, I received an unexpected visitor.
Not Daniel.
Not Vanessa.
Someone else.
A woman wearing a gray coat stood outside my door.
She held a folder.
“I think you deserve to know what really happened.””
I stared at her.
“Who are you?””
She looked nervous.
“My name is Olivia Hart.””
I waited.
She swallowed.
“I used to work directly for Vanessa.””
I looked at the folder in her hands.
“What’s inside?””
Her eyes filled with fear.
“Proof.””
“Proof of what?””
She glanced behind her.
Like someone might be watching.
Then she whispered:
“Proof that Daniel was never the person Vanessa planned to marry.””
I froze.
“Then who was?””
May you like
Olivia opened the folder.
And the name written on the first page made my heart stop.
