Chapter 10: The Man Who Started Everything
I had spent days believing Vanessa was the mastermind.
Then Ethan.
Then Daniel.
But I never imagined the person standing behind everything was someone who had been silent for years.
Daniel’s father.
Richard Whitmore.
The man who never attended board meetings.
The man who never appeared in company photos.
The man Daniel always described as “retired.””
I stared at the security footage.
“Your father?””
Daniel nodded slowly.
“He’s been gone for seven years.””
Rachel looked confused.
“Gone?””
Daniel looked at the screen.
“He moved overseas after selling his old investments. At least that’s what he told everyone.””
I looked at him.
“You never knew he was involved?””
His face tightened.
“No.””
For the first time, I saw something in Daniel that wasn’t guilt.
Fear.
Real fear.
“Claire, my father doesn’t care about money.””
I frowned.
“What does he care about?””
Daniel looked at the screen.
“Control.””
The word hung in the air.
Rachel immediately started searching records.
“Richard Whitmore still has active connections to several holding companies.””
I walked toward the archive room.
“So he was watching us?””
Daniel followed.
“I don’t know.””
“But someone accessed these files.””
He didn’t answer.
Because he knew.
We entered the executive archives.
Most of the drawers were untouched.
But one cabinet was open.
Rachel examined it.
“Someone removed documents.””
“What kind?””
She checked the labels.
“Original incorporation papers.””
My stomach tightened.
“Why would anyone want those?””
Daniel looked at me.
“Because they prove who founded the company.””
I stared at him.
“Me?””
He nodded.
“And my father knows that.””
I felt anger rise.
Not because someone wanted my company.
Because someone wanted to erase my contribution.
Rachel found a small envelope hidden behind the cabinet.
No name.
No label.
Inside was a handwritten note.
I unfolded it.
Three sentences.
*Claire,*
*You were never supposed to find this.*
*Ask Daniel why his father was at your wedding.*
I looked up.
“What does that mean?””
Daniel’s face changed.
“I don’t know.””
But his voice was uncertain.
And I noticed.
“You do know something.””
He looked away.
“Daniel.””
He sighed.
“My father hated that I married you.””
“Why?””
“Because he thought I was becoming dependent on you.””
I stared at him.
“So he wanted me gone?””
Daniel shook his head.
“Not exactly.””
“What does that mean?””
He hesitated.
Then whispered:
“My father believed marriage was a business transaction.””
The silence that followed felt heavy.
I remembered my wedding day.
The beautiful ceremony.
The promises.
The photographs.
I remembered Richard standing in the corner.
Watching.
Not smiling.
Not celebrating.
Just watching.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
Daniel looked ashamed.
“Because I was embarrassed.””
I laughed softly.
“Everyone keeps saying that.””
He looked at me.
“What?””
“That they were embarrassed.””
I held the note.
“But nobody was embarrassed enough to stop hurting me.””
Daniel had no answer.
At midnight, we returned home.
I thought the night was over.
Then my security alarm went off.
Someone was outside.
Rachel immediately called security.
Daniel looked toward the window.
“Claire.””
I followed his gaze.
A shadow moved near the gate.
Then my phone received a message.
Unknown number.
One sentence.
*Your husband is not the only Whitmore who betrayed you.*
I looked at Daniel.
His face had gone pale.
Because underneath the message was a photograph.
A photograph of Richard Whitmore.
Standing beside me.
At my wedding.
But the date on the photo was impossible.
It was taken before the ceremony.
And Richard wasn’t watching.
He was handing someone a folder.
May you like
The person receiving it was me.
Except I had no memory of it.
