Chapter 12: The Return Of A Forgotten Ally

The person standing at the top of my stairs was holding an old leather briefcase.

The same kind my father used to carry.

I stared.

“Who are you?””

The person stepped into the light.

“Emily Carter.””

My heart stopped.

Emily.

My father’s assistant.

The woman who disappeared after his death.

The woman everyone thought had left the country.

Daniel looked confused.

“Why are you here?””

Emily looked at him carefully.

“Because your father was right about you.””

The words hit harder than expected.

Daniel looked away.

Rachel moved closer.

“Emily, you need to explain.””

She placed the briefcase on the table.

“Your father knew Richard would eventually come back.””

I opened the briefcase.

Inside were documents.

Old recordings.

Letters.

Everything my father had kept hidden.

“Why didn’t you give me these years ago?””

Emily’s eyes filled with sadness.

“Because your father told me not to.””

I looked up.

“Why?””

“Because he wanted you to build your own life before knowing how many people wanted to take it from you.””

I touched the documents.

My father knew.

He knew exactly what kind of people surrounded me.

Emily handed me a letter.

“Your father wrote this the night before your wedding.””

I opened it.

The handwriting was familiar.

*Claire,*

*If you are reading this, it means someone tried to convince you that your value depends on what you own.*

My hands trembled.

*Never forget. You built something nobody can take away from you.*

I swallowed.

Then I read the final line.

*But if Richard Whitmore ever returns, trust nobody with the last piece of the company.*

I looked at Emily.

“What last piece?””

She opened another document.

“The original technology patent.””

Daniel frowned.

“What patent?””

Emily looked at him.

“The invention that made Whitmore Dynamics valuable.””

I stared.

“The company wasn’t built on contracts?””

She shook her head.

“No.””

She pointed to the document.

“It was built on your father’s invention.””

My mind raced.

“My father created the technology?””

“Yes.””

“And I own it?””

Emily nodded.

“Your father transferred ownership to you before he died.””

The room went silent.

Everything suddenly made sense.

Richard wasn’t after the company.

He was after the foundation beneath it.

The one thing that could destroy his plans.

Daniel looked devastated.

“I had no idea.””

Emily looked at him.

“That’s because your father made sure you didn’t.””

I turned.

“What do you mean?””

Emily took a deep breath.

“Richard always believed you were too weak to control the company.””

Daniel looked hurt.

“He’s my father.””

“Yes.””

Emily’s voice softened.

“But he never saw you as a son.””

The truth landed harder than any accusation.

Daniel sat down.

For once, he had no defense.

Then Rachel’s phone rang.

She answered.

Her face changed.

“What happened?””

She listened.

Then looked at me.

“Richard Whitmore just filed an emergency lawsuit.””

My stomach tightened.

“On what grounds?””

Rachel looked at the documents.

“He claims the company was built using his family assets.””

Emily shook her head.

“No.””

Everyone looked at her.

“He’s lying.””

“How do you know?””

Emily opened the final folder.

Inside was a video recording.

A video from years ago.

My father.

Richard.

And another person in the room.

Daniel.

Young.

Listening.

Emily pressed play.

My father’s voice filled the room.

“If Richard tries to claim this company, this recording proves the truth.””

The video continued.

Then Richard said something that made everyone freeze.

“I don’t care who owns the company.””

He leaned forward.

“I only care about making sure Claire never finds out what Daniel did.””

The recording stopped.

I looked at Daniel.

He looked terrified.

Because whatever happened next…

May you like

Was something he had been hiding for years.

And this time, there was no escaping it.
