Chapter 9: The Woman Who Smiled at Me

I stared at the photograph.

My mind refused to accept what my eyes were seeing.

Vanessa.

Linda’s closest friend.

The woman who always complimented my cooking.

The woman who hugged me during family gatherings.

The woman who once told me:

“You’re lucky to have Derek.””

My stomach turned.

Because she wasn’t complimenting me.

She was studying me.

Derek reached for the photograph.

I pulled it away.

“No.””

His eyes lifted.

“Give me that.””

“Why?””

His jaw tightened.

“Because you don’t know the whole story.””

I looked at him.

“I know enough.””

Rachel took the photo from me.

Her expression changed.

“You knew her?””

I nodded slowly.

“She’s been around our family for years.””

Rachel looked at Derek.

“You brought her into our lives?””

Derek didn’t answer.

That answer was louder than words.

Linda looked confused.

“Vanessa?””

She touched her forehead.

“Derek, what is happening?””

I turned toward Linda.

“You know her.””

Linda shook her head.

“Of course I know her. She’s been my friend.””

The room became silent.

Then Rachel opened one of the letters.

Her eyes moved quickly.

And then stopped.

“What?””

I stepped closer.

“What does it say?””

She handed it to me.

The handwriting was Vanessa’s.

*Derek,*

*I know you said your marriage was temporary. I know you promised she would never find out.*

My heart sank.

I read the next line.

*But I’m tired of waiting for you to leave her.*

I looked up.

Derek looked defeated.

Linda covered her mouth.

“No.””

I looked at Derek.

“How long?””

He said nothing.

“How long were you with her?””

Finally, he whispered:

“Before you.””

Rachel stared at him.

“What?””

Derek looked away.

“It started before I met her.””

The room exploded.

Linda stepped back.

“You married another woman while seeing her?””

“No.””

“Then explain!””

He couldn’t.

Because there was no explanation.

Only choices.

I kept reading.

The letters continued.

Vanessa knew about me.

She knew about the house.

She knew Derek wanted access to my trust.

One letter made my hands shake.

*Once she signs everything over, we can finally stop pretending.*

I looked at Derek.

“You were planning to take my house.””

He didn’t deny it.

Rachel whispered:

“He used me for money.””

I looked at her.

Then at myself.

Two women.

Two marriages.

The same pattern.

David Collins took the letters.

“This changes everything.””

Derek looked at him.

“What are you saying?””

David’s expression was serious.

“I’m saying these documents may establish intent.””

Derek became pale.

“Intent for what?””

David looked at me.

“For financial fraud.””

Derek stepped back.

“No.””

I watched him finally understand.

The things he did in secret were no longer secret.

The door behind us suddenly opened.

Everyone turned.

Linda’s face went white.

Because Vanessa was standing there.

Holding a birthday gift.

Smiling.

“I was wondering why nobody answered.””

Nobody moved.

She looked around the room.

Then noticed the box.

Her smile disappeared.

Slowly.

“What did you find?””

No one answered.

Vanessa looked at Derek.

Then at me.

And I saw it.

For one second.

Fear.

Real fear.

She knew.

She knew everything had fallen apart.

I stepped forward.

“Vanessa.””

She forced a smile.

“Yes?””

I held up the photograph.

“Would you like to explain why your name is carved into a box full of secrets?””

Her face went completely still.

Then she said something that made Derek turn toward her in shock.

“I told you this would happen.””

The room froze.

Derek stared at her.

“What did you say?””

Vanessa looked at him.

And for the first time, she wasn’t pretending.

“I told you she would find out.””

I watched Derek’s expression change.

Because he realized something.

Vanessa wasn’t afraid of being exposed.

She was afraid of something worse.

Something Derek didn’t know.

She looked directly at me.

“I didn’t come here for Linda’s birthday.””

A pause.

May you like

Then she smiled faintly.

“I came here because I knew the truth about your marriage before you did.””
