Chapter 14: The Woman My Grandmother Knew

I left Jonathan’s office with more questions than answers.

But one thing was clear.

My grandmother had seen something coming.

Years before Derek entered my life.

Years before Linda demanded sixty dishes.

Years before anyone tried to take my home.

She knew.

The question was how much she knew.

That evening, I returned to the house.

Not Derek’s house.

Not the Mercer family house.

Mine.

For the first time, I walked through the front door without feeling like a guest.

The rooms looked different.

Not because anything changed.

Because I changed.

I went straight to my grandmother’s old study.

A room I rarely entered after her death.

Dust covered the shelves.

But everything was still exactly where she left it.

David followed me.

“You think there’s something here?””

“I don’t know.””

I opened the old wooden desk.

Inside was a small envelope.

My name was written on it.

My breath caught.

David watched quietly.

I opened it.

Inside was a letter.

My grandmother’s handwriting.

*My dear granddaughter,*

*If you are reading this, then someone has finally shown you who they are.*

I sat down.

The words blurred for a moment.

I continued.

*People will tell you the house is valuable because of money. They are wrong.*

*The house is valuable because it represents something your great-grandmother fought to protect.*

I looked around the study.

David leaned closer.

The letter continued.

*A home is not made of walls. It is made of the people who protect it when nobody is watching.*

I swallowed.

Then I reached the final paragraph.

*If someone tries to take this from you, do not fight because of the property. Fight because of what it represents.*

A tear slipped down my cheek.

Not because I was sad.

Because for the first time in months, I felt understood.

My grandmother knew exactly who I was.

David looked at the letter.

“She knew.””

I nodded.

“She knew people would come.””

Suddenly, my phone rang.

Rachel.

I answered immediately.

“Is everything okay?””

Her voice sounded urgent.

“Emma found something.””

My heart tightened.

“What?””

“She found another box.””

I stood.

“Where?””

“At the old house.””

I froze.

“The house Derek lived in before.””

“Yes.””

David grabbed his coat.

“Let’s go.””

When we arrived, Rachel was waiting outside.

Emma stood beside her holding a small wooden box.

The little girl looked nervous.

“I’m sorry.””

I knelt beside her.

“Why are you sorry?””

“Because I opened something Daddy told me never to touch.””

I looked at Rachel.

Then at the box.

“It’s okay.””

Emma handed it to me.

Inside were papers.

Old papers.

The first one made my heart stop.

A marriage certificate.

Derek.

And another woman.

Not Rachel.

Not me.

Someone else.

David looked shocked.

“There’s another marriage?””

Rachel whispered:

“How many lives did this man have?””

I kept searching.

Then I found a letter.

The handwriting wasn’t Derek’s.

It was Jonathan’s.

I opened it.

*Everything is ready.*

*The third marriage will complete the transfer.*

My blood ran cold.

Third marriage.

I looked at David.

“What does this mean?””

He took the letter.

His face changed.

Then he whispered:

“Derek wasn’t trying to steal the house after marrying you.””

A pause.

“He was trying to marry you because of the house.””

I stared at the papers.

The entire marriage.

The entire relationship.

Everything.

A plan.

Then Rachel noticed another document.

She picked it up.

“Wait.””

Everyone looked at her.

Her face turned pale.

“What?””

She handed it to me.

It was a list.

Names.

Dates.

Targets.

At the bottom was one final name.

Mine.

But beside it was something else.

A note written by Jonathan.

*Final transfer after emotional collapse.*

I looked at Derek’s entire plan.

And I finally understood.

May you like

He wasn’t expecting me to leave.

He was expecting me to break.
