Chapter 12: The Last Move
Derek immediately shook his head.
“That wasn’t me.””
Nobody reacted.
Because we had heard that before.
Every time.
A denial.
An excuse.
A reason why nothing was his fault.
I kept the phone to my ear.
“Officer, can you tell me what happened?””
The officer explained.
Someone had attempted to change ownership information connected to the property.
Someone had tried to transfer control.
The attempt failed because the records required additional verification.
But the request had already been logged.
And the name attached to it was Derek Mercer.
I looked at him.
“You tried to take the house tonight.””
He shook his head.
“No.””
David stepped forward.
“Then why was your identification used?””
Derek looked around the room.
Everyone was watching him.
Even Linda.
Especially Linda.
“I was trying to fix things.””
I almost couldn’t believe it.
“Fix?””
He nodded quickly.
“I knew everything was falling apart.””
His voice became desperate.
“I thought if I moved the property temporarily—”
“Temporarily?””
I interrupted.
“You tried to steal my home.””
“No.””
He looked at me.
“I was protecting our future.””
That sentence was the final insult.
“Our future?””
I pointed toward the documents.
“You destroyed our past.””
Derek went quiet.
The police officer asked:
“Mrs. Mercer, do you want to file a formal report?””
I looked at Derek.
The man who once made me afraid to speak.
The man who thought I would always forgive him.
I thought about the kitchen.
His hand in my hair.
His mother smiling.
The sixty dishes.
The years of humiliation.
“Yes,” I said.
Derek’s face changed.
“No.””
I ended the call.
The room was silent.
Then Linda whispered:
“You’re really doing this?””
I looked at her.
“Yes.””
She looked hurt.
But not angry.
Maybe because she finally understood.
“I thought you loved him.””
I nodded.
“I did.””
A tear appeared in her eyes.
“Then why?””
I looked at Derek.
“Because love doesn’t mean allowing someone to destroy you.””
Nobody spoke.
Later that night, the birthday decorations were removed.
The cake remained untouched.
The sixty-dish list was still sitting on the counter.
A symbol of the moment everything changed.
Rachel stayed with Emma.
David began organizing the evidence.
And Derek sat alone in the living room.
For the first time, he looked small.
Not powerful.
Not confident.
Just a man watching his lies collapse.
Before leaving, I walked past him.
He looked up.
“Do you hate me?””
I stopped.
That question surprised me.
Because after everything…
that was what he wanted to know.
Not if I was hurt.
Not how much damage he caused.
Whether I hated him.
I looked at him.
“No.””
His eyes lifted.
“I don’t hate you.””
A small amount of relief appeared.
Then I continued.
“I just finally see you.””
The relief disappeared.
I walked away.
The next morning, David called.
“Mrs. Mercer.””
His voice sounded serious.
“We found something else.””
I sat down.
“What?””
A pause.
“Another account.””
My stomach tightened.
“What kind of account?””
“One connected to Derek.””
I closed my eyes.
“How much?””
David was quiet.
Then answered.
“Enough to explain why he needed your trust.””
I looked out the window.
“Tell me.””
His next words changed everything.
“Derek wasn’t trying to save himself.””
A pause.
“He was paying someone.””
“Who?””
David hesitated.
Then said:
“The person who helped him create this entire plan.””
I felt cold.
“Who?””
The answer came slowly.
And when I heard the name…
I understood why Derek had been so desperate.
Because the person behind everything wasn’t Linda.
Wasn’t Vanessa.
Wasn’t even Derek.
May you like
It was someone I had trusted for years.
*My own attorney.*
