Chapter 5: The Account He Couldn’t Hide

Derek spent the next thirty seconds pretending nothing happened.

That was his favorite trick.

Pretend.

Pretend the problem didn’t exist.

Pretend the truth would disappear if nobody spoke about it.

He put his phone into his pocket.

“Everything is fine.””

I stared at him.

“No, it isn’t.””

Linda looked nervous.

“Derek, what was that call?””

He forced a smile.

“Business.””

Rachel crossed her arms.

“Interesting.””

Derek looked at her.

“What?””

“Because that’s exactly what you told me when creditors started calling during our marriage.””

His face tightened.

Linda looked between them.

“You had debt?””

Derek’s silence answered.

I watched Linda process everything.

For years, she had treated me like an outsider.

But now she was realizing something.

She wasn’t protected from Derek’s lies.

She was part of them.

I walked toward the dining table.

The birthday decorations suddenly looked ridiculous.

The balloons.

The flowers.

The expensive cake.

Everything I had done for people who saw me as a servant.

“I want the truth,” I said.

Derek laughed bitterly.

“You think you’re entitled to demand things now?””

I turned around.

“Yes.””

His expression changed.

Because he realized I wasn’t asking.

I was done asking.

Rachel stepped forward.

“He owes people money.””

Derek glared at her.

“Stop talking.””

“No.””

Her voice was calm.

“You ruined my life because you thought I would stay quiet.””

She looked at me.

“I won’t make the same mistake twice.””

I picked up the documents again.

“Rachel, what exactly did he do?””

She took a deep breath.

“He used my father’s company accounts.””

Derek interrupted.

“That was a misunderstanding.””

Rachel looked at him.

“A misunderstanding doesn’t involve fake signatures.””

Linda gasped.

“Fake signatures?””

Derek looked at his mother.

“Mom, don’t listen to this.””

But she stepped away from him.

A small movement.

Almost invisible.

But I noticed.

She was afraid.

Not of Rachel.

Of Derek.

Rachel continued.

“He was investigated.””

I looked at Derek.

“What happened?””

He looked away.

“The case was dropped.””

Rachel nodded.

“Because I refused to testify.””

I frowned.

“Why?””

Her expression softened.

“Because I was pregnant.””

The room went quiet.

Derek looked uncomfortable.

“You don’t need to tell her everything.””

Rachel ignored him.

“I was trying to protect my child.””

My chest tightened.

Not because I felt sorry for Derek.

Because I finally understood.

He didn’t just hide things.

He built entire lives around lies.

My phone buzzed again.

This time, it was from my attorney.

*The bank responded. We confirmed unauthorized activity connected to your husband’s accounts. Call me immediately.*

I read it twice.

Unauthorized activity.

Connected to Derek.

I looked at him.

“Did you use my accounts?””

His eyes moved away.

That was enough.

Linda stepped back.

“Derek?””

He became defensive.

“I borrowed money.””

“From me?””

“You’re my wife.””

The words were so casual.

Like my money belonged to him automatically.

I felt something break.

Not my heart.

Something stronger.

My patience.

“You didn’t borrow anything.””

He frowned.

“What?””

“You took it.””

His jaw tightened.

“You’re being dramatic again.””

Rachel shook her head.

“There it is.””

I looked at her.

“What?””

“The phrase.””

She gave a sad smile.

“He used to say that to me too.””

Derek slammed his hand on the table.

“Enough!””

The sound echoed through the room.

But nobody moved.

Because this time, he wasn’t controlling us.

He was losing control.

Then the front door opened.

A man in a dark suit walked inside.

He held a folder.

Derek immediately went pale.

“Why are you here?””

The man looked at him.

“Because the bank requested a formal review.””

He looked around the room.

Then at me.

“Mrs. Mercer?””

I nodded.

“Yes?””

He handed me the folder.

“I’m here regarding financial activity connected to your husband.””

I opened it.

The first page made my hands go cold.

There was a signature.

My signature.

But I had never signed that document.

I looked at Derek.

“Explain this.””

For the first time, he had nothing to say.

May you like

Because the document in my hands proved something worse than betrayal.

It proved he had planned it.
