Chapter 6: The Signature That Wasn’t Mine
The room became completely silent.
I stared at the document.
My name.
My signature.
My information.
But none of it was mine.
The man in the suit introduced himself.
“David Collins from Mercer Financial Investigations.””
I almost laughed at the irony of his last name.
Mercer.
The same name Derek used like a crown.
“Can you explain?”” I asked.
David nodded.
“This document authorizes a transfer from an account connected to your trust.””
Linda looked confused.
“Her trust?””
I didn’t answer.
I kept staring at Derek.
He couldn’t look at me.
That was all the confirmation I needed.
“Derek.””
My voice was quiet.
“What did you do?””
He immediately became defensive.
“I didn’t do anything wrong.””
Rachel whispered:
“Same answer every time.””
Derek ignored her.
“You’re misunderstanding the situation.””
I held up the paper.
“My signature is on a document I never signed.””
He stepped closer.
“It was for the house.””
“No.””
My voice became firmer.
“It was for your debt.””
His face changed.
Only slightly.
But enough.
Linda noticed too.
“What debt?””
Derek looked at his mother.
“Mom, please.””
“No.””
Her voice shook.
“What debt?””
For the first time, Linda wasn’t defending him.
She was demanding answers.
David opened another folder.
“There are multiple transactions.””
He placed several pages on the table.
“Several payments made over the last year.””
I scanned the numbers.
My money.
My savings.
Money I had set aside for my future.
Money I thought was protected.
Derek stepped forward.
“You’re making this look worse than it is.””
I looked at him.
“You forged my signature.””
His silence was louder than any confession.
Linda sat down.
The woman who always stood proudly beside him suddenly looked old.
Small.
Broken.
“I don’t understand.””
Rachel looked at her.
“Neither did I.””
Linda looked up.
“What does that mean?””
Rachel sighed.
“It means you weren’t the first person he lied to.””
Derek’s anger returned.
“Stop acting like you’re innocent.””
Rachel froze.
I noticed.
“Derek.””
He looked at me.
“What?””
“What did you just mean?””
He realized his mistake.
Too late.
Rachel’s face changed.
“You told her?””
Derek looked away.
“Told me what?””
Nobody answered.
Then Rachel slowly reached into her bag.
She pulled out another envelope.
“This.””
She handed it to me.
I opened it.
Inside was a copy of a medical report.
A birth certificate.
And a photograph.
A little girl.
Derek’s eyes widened.
“No.””
Rachel looked at him.
“Yes.””
My hands trembled.
I looked at the photograph.
Then at Derek.
“What am I looking at?””
Rachel’s voice was quiet.
“The daughter he never told you about.””
The room stopped.
Linda covered her mouth.
Derek immediately shook his head.
“She’s lying.””
Rachel’s eyes filled with anger.
“You abandoned us.””
“I didn’t.””
“You disappeared the moment my father’s company collapsed.””
Derek looked at me.
“She’s trying to destroy me.””
But I wasn’t looking at Rachel.
I was looking at him.
Because suddenly, every strange phone call made sense.
Every weekend he claimed was “work.””
Every unexplained trip.
Every time he became angry when I asked questions.
“How old is she?”” I asked.
Rachel answered.
“Six.””
Six years old.
The same amount of time Derek and I had been together.
I felt sick.
Because that meant while I was building a marriage…
he was hiding an entire life.
Derek moved closer.
“Listen to me.””
I stepped back.
“No.””
His expression softened.
That scared me more than his anger.
Because it was the version of him that used to make me forgive him.
“Please.””
I looked at him.
“Please what?””
He opened his mouth.
Nothing came out.
Then his phone rang again.
This time, he didn’t answer.
The screen lit up.
A name appeared.
A name that made my blood run cold.
*Emma.*
Rachel looked at the phone.
Her face changed.
“That’s my daughter.””
Nobody moved.
Derek stared at the screen.
Then the phone stopped ringing.
A second later, a voicemail notification appeared.
David looked at me.
“Do you want to hear it?””
I looked at Derek.
He looked terrified.
Not angry.
Not confident.
Terrified.
I pressed play.
A little girl’s voice filled the room.
“Daddy… why won’t you answer me?””
Derek closed his eyes.
May you like
And then she said the words that changed everything.
“I found the box you told me never to open.””
