Chapter 11: The Family Secret Buried for Decades

I read the letter again.

Slowly.

Trying to understand every word.

The Mercer family.

My grandmother.

The house.

None of it made sense.

Linda looked at me.

“What does that letter say?””

I didn’t answer immediately.

Because I wasn’t sure I wanted to know.

Some truths don’t just destroy the present.

They rewrite the past.

David carefully took the letter.

“May I?””

I handed it to him.

He read silently.

Then his expression changed.

“This is important.””

Derek stepped closer.

“Give me that.””

David moved the paper away.

“No.””

Derek’s anger returned.

“You don’t know what you’re holding.””

David looked at him.

“Actually, I think I do.””

Rachel watched Derek.

“What did your family do?””

Linda looked at her son.

“Derek?””

For once, he didn’t answer.

Vanessa spoke quietly.

“His grandfather.””

Everyone turned.

“What about him?”” I asked.

She looked at Linda.

“You know.””

Linda’s face became pale.

“No.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“You knew.””

The room became silent.

Linda slowly sat down.

“My husband said never to talk about it.””

I stared at her.

“Talk about what?””

She looked at the floor.

“The house.””

I felt my heartbeat increase.

“What about it?””

Linda whispered:

“It wasn’t supposed to belong to you.””

I waited.

She continued.

“Years ago, Derek’s grandfather tried to take it.””

David looked at the letter again.

“Take it how?””

Linda closed her eyes.

“Fraud.””

Nobody spoke.

“He convinced people to sign documents they didn’t understand.””

My stomach tightened.

The same pattern.

Different generation.

Different faces.

Same behavior.

“My grandmother found out,” I whispered.

Linda nodded.

“She exposed him.””

Rachel looked at Derek.

“And the family never forgave her.””

Vanessa stepped closer.

“That’s why Derek wanted the house.””

I looked at her.

“Because of revenge?””

She nodded.

“He didn’t just want the property.””

A pause.

“He wanted to prove your family could be defeated.””

The room felt colder.

I looked at Derek.

“Was that true?””

He didn’t answer.

I didn’t need him to.

Because his silence had become his confession.

Linda suddenly stood.

“You knew all along?””

Derek looked at his mother.

“Mom…”

“No.””

Her voice broke.

“You knew this was about revenge?””

He looked away.

“I had a reason.””

Linda stared at him.

“That is not a reason.””

For years, Linda had demanded loyalty.

Now she was discovering where that loyalty led.

To her own son.

Vanessa walked toward the door.

“I should leave.””

Derek looked at her.

“You’re leaving me?””

She laughed.

“You never had me.””

The sentence hit him harder than anything else.

Vanessa turned to me.

“I’m sorry.””

I looked at her.

“Why help me now?””

Her face changed.

“Because I realized something.””

“What?””

She looked toward Derek.

“He would have done the same thing to me.””

That answer was more honest than anything Derek had ever given.

After she left, David gathered the documents.

“We need to move quickly.””

I looked at him.

“Why?””

He hesitated.

“Because if Derek knows we have this evidence, he may try to protect himself.””

I looked toward the empty doorway.

“Protect himself how?””

David didn’t answer immediately.

Then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

Again.

I answered.

A man’s voice spoke.

“Mrs. Mercer?””

“Yes?””

“This is Officer Bennett.””

My heart tightened.

“Why is the police calling me?””

A pause.

Then:

“We found someone trying to access your property records tonight.””

I looked at Derek.

He looked back at me.

The color drained from his face.

Officer Bennett continued.

“And the person who tried to access them…”

May you like

Another pause.

“…was using your husband’s identification.””
