Chapter 8: The Woman Behind the Lie

The name stayed in the air.

Vanessa.

Nobody spoke.

Then Derek’s expression changed.

Not confusion.

Recognition.

I saw it immediately.

He knew that name.

Rachel saw it too.

“You know who Vanessa is.””

Derek looked away.

“No.””

Rachel laughed bitterly.

“You’re still lying?””

Linda stepped toward him.

“Derek.””

Her voice was different now.

Not angry.

Disappointed.

“Who is Vanessa?””

He didn’t answer.

I felt something inside me become painfully clear.

Derek’s secrets weren’t random.

They were connected.

Every lie had another lie underneath.

David Collins gathered the documents.

“I believe we need to locate this box.””

Rachel nodded.

“I know where Emma is.””

She grabbed her coat.

“I’m going.””

I followed her.

Derek looked at me.

“You’re leaving?””

I looked at him.

“Yes.””

His face changed.

“You’re my wife.””

I stared at him.

“No.””

The word surprised even me.

“I was your wife when I believed I knew you.””

He stepped closer.

“I made mistakes.””

“Mistakes are forgetting an appointment.””

I looked directly into his eyes.

“Building a second life is a choice.””

He had no response.

That was the first time I saw him without an excuse.

Twenty minutes later, we arrived at a small neighborhood house.

Rachel ran to the front door.

A woman opened it.

“Rachel?””

“She’s inside.””

We entered.

Emma was sitting at a kitchen table.

A tiny girl with brown hair and a purple sweater.

She looked nervous.

When she saw Derek behind us, she immediately looked down.

That hurt more than anything.

A child shouldn’t look at her father like a stranger.

Derek stopped.

“Emma.””

She didn’t answer.

Rachel knelt beside her.

“Sweetheart, this is Dad.””

Emma looked at him.

Then at me.

“Are you the wife?””

Nobody spoke.

I swallowed.

“Yes.””

She looked sad.

“Did he tell you about me?””

I couldn’t lie.

“No.””

Emma nodded slowly.

Like she expected that answer.

Then she reached into her backpack.

“I found this.””

She pulled out a small key.

Derek’s face changed.

“Where did you get that?””

Emma looked afraid.

“Under the floor.””

Rachel took the key carefully.

“What does it open?””

Emma shook her head.

“I don’t know.””

David looked around.

“Where was the box?””

Emma pointed toward the hallway.

“In the old room.””

Derek stepped back.

Everyone noticed.

“You know that room?”” I asked.

He didn’t answer.

Rachel stood.

“You were there.””

“No.””

“You were.””

Her voice became stronger.

“You hid something from us.””

Derek rubbed his forehead.

“I was trying to protect everyone.””

I almost laughed.

“Protect?””

He looked at me.

“Yes.””

“By hiding a child?””

His face fell.

David looked at the key.

“We need to see what’s inside.””

We returned to the house.

The old room was locked.

A room at the back of the property.

One Derek always told me was full of old family belongings.

I had never been allowed inside.

Now I understood why.

The key turned.

The lock clicked.

Derek stood behind us.

His breathing became uneven.

The door opened.

Dust filled the air.

Inside were boxes.

Old photographs.

Documents.

And on the floor was a small wooden container.

With one word carved into the top.

*VANESSA.*

Derek whispered:

“No.””

Rachel picked it up.

“What is this?””

Derek didn’t answer.

I opened the lid.

Inside was a stack of letters.

A wedding ring.

And a photograph.

I picked it up.

My hands went cold.

Because the woman in the picture wasn’t a stranger.

She was someone I knew.

Someone who had stood beside Linda at every family event.

Someone who had smiled at me while hiding the truth.

May you like

On the back of the photograph were four words.

*Our secret family begins.*
