Chapter 4: The First Wife’s Envelope
I stared at the name written on the envelope.
A name I had never heard.
A woman I had never known existed.
Derek’s face told me everything before I even opened it.
He wasn’t confused.
He wasn’t surprised.
He was terrified.
“Derek,” Linda whispered, looking between us.
“Who is she?””
He didn’t answer.
That was the first time I saw him unable to control a room.
For years, Derek had always been prepared.
He knew exactly what to say when Linda criticized me.
He knew exactly how to make me question myself.
He knew exactly how to turn every argument into my fault.
But now?
He stood frozen.
The woman held my gaze.
“My name is Rachel Whitmore.””
She took a slow breath.
“I was married to Derek seven years ago.””
Linda’s mouth opened.
Then closed.
“That’s impossible.””
Rachel looked at her.
“No. What’s impossible is that he convinced another woman to marry him without telling her the truth.””
Derek stepped forward.
“Rachel, leave.””
Her expression hardened.
“You said that last time too.””
The room became silent.
I looked at Derek.
“Last time?””
He avoided my eyes.
That hurt more than I expected.
Not because I loved him.
Not anymore.
But because I realized how much of my marriage had been built on things I never knew.
Rachel handed me the envelope.
“He never told you about the divorce?””
I shook my head slowly.
“He said he had never been married.””
A bitter smile crossed her face.
“Of course he did.””
Derek’s voice became sharp.
“You don’t know what you’re talking about.””
Rachel laughed quietly.
“I know exactly what I’m talking about.””
She pointed toward the envelope.
“Everything you need is inside.””
My fingers tightened around it.
I opened it.
The first thing I saw was a photograph.
Derek.
A younger version of him.
Standing beside Rachel.
Both of them smiling.
Behind them was the same house.
My house.
The one Derek claimed belonged to his family.
My stomach dropped.
“What is this?””
Rachel looked at me sadly.
“The beginning of the lie.””
I turned the page.
There were copies of legal papers.
Financial records.
Messages.
And one sentence highlighted in yellow.
*Property transferred after settlement agreement.*
I looked up.
“Why is my house in these documents?””
Derek moved quickly.
“Because she’s manipulating you.””
Rachel shook her head.
“No. Because I’m the person who knows what he did before you.””
Linda grabbed the papers from my hand.
She scanned them.
Her face slowly changed.
“Derek…”
He immediately turned toward her.
“Mom, don’t listen to her.””
But Linda wasn’t looking at him.
She was reading.
For the first time, I saw doubt in her eyes.
Rachel continued.
“Derek married me because my family had money.””
Derek snapped.
“Stop.””
“He convinced me he loved me. Then after my father died, he tried to claim everything.””
I looked at Rachel.
“What happened?””
She swallowed.
“I found out he had been hiding debts. Huge ones.””
Derek’s face turned red.
“That was years ago.””
Rachel nodded.
“Yes. And you promised you changed.””
She looked at me.
“But people like Derek don’t change when they get what they want.””
The sentence landed harder than I expected.
Because it explained everything.
The charm.
The confidence.
The way he always made himself the victim.
My phone buzzed.
I looked down.
Another message from the unknown number.
This time, it was a photo.
A photo of Derek.
Standing outside a bank.
With Linda.
The date was six months ago.
The same month I discovered the property records.
I looked at Rachel.
“You said he tried to claim your money.””
She nodded.
“He did.””
I turned toward Derek.
“Did you know I found the trust documents?””
His silence answered.
Linda looked confused.
“What documents?””
I watched Derek carefully.
Then I said the words I had been holding for months.
“The house isn’t yours.””
Linda’s face went pale.
“What?””
Derek immediately stepped forward.
“Don’t do this.””
I looked at him.
“Do what?””
“Destroy this family.””
I almost laughed.
The irony was unbelievable.
The man who dragged me across his kitchen was afraid of losing his family.
Rachel whispered:
“He always says that.””
I looked at her.
“What?””
“He always says people are destroying the family when they discover what he did.””
Derek’s expression changed.
Anger replaced fear.
“You’re all against me.””
“No,” I said quietly.
“I’m finally standing beside myself.””
For a moment, nobody spoke.
Then Derek’s phone rang.
He looked at the screen.
His face changed again.
This time, it wasn’t fear.
It was panic.
He answered.
“Hello?””
A man’s voice came through the speaker.
Derek stepped away.
“What do you mean frozen?””
I watched him closely.
The room felt colder.
Linda whispered:
“What’s happening?””
Derek ended the call.
His hands were trembling.
I had never seen him like that.
“What was that?”” I asked.
He looked at me.
And for the first time, he didn’t have an answer.
May you like
Because whatever was happening outside this house…
was something even Derek couldn’t control.
