Chapter 9: The Betrayal From Inside My Home

The photograph sat on the table.

Nobody touched it.

Nobody spoke.

Because everyone was afraid of what it meant.

I stared at the watch.

A simple silver watch.

A watch I had personally chosen.

A watch I gave to someone because I believed they would always protect me.

My hands shook slightly.

“No.””

The stranger looked at me.

“You know who it is.””

I didn’t answer.

I couldn’t.

Because saying the name would make it real.

Brooke looked at the photograph.

Then at me.

“Ethan…”

I raised my hand.

Not because I was angry.

Because I needed silence.

I needed one moment where nobody lied to me.

The ballroom waited.

Finally, I whispered:

“My brother.””

A wave of shock moved through the room.

Several guests looked confused.

My younger brother, Adrian, had always been the person everyone thought I trusted most.

He was the one who visited me after my accident.

The one who told me not to give up.

The one who told me people would reveal themselves during hard times.

I believed him.

Maybe that was the biggest mistake.

The stranger nodded.

“Adrian was involved.””

I closed my eyes.

Memories appeared.

Adrian sitting beside my hospital bed.

Adrian telling me:

“You need to focus on healing. I’ll handle everything else.””

At the time, I thought he was helping.

Now I wondered what “everything else” really meant.

Chad looked almost relieved.

“Finally.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

He smiled.

“Now you know.””

The way he said it bothered me.

Like he wasn’t afraid anymore.

Like he knew something I didn’t.

“What are you talking about?””

Chad stepped closer.

“You think I was the one in control?””

The room became quiet.

He laughed.

“You still don’t get it.””

The stranger immediately moved toward me.

“Mr. Carter, be careful.””

I watched Chad.

“Then explain.””

Chad looked around the room.

At the guests.

At the cameras.

At everyone who had witnessed his humiliation.

Then he smiled.

“Your accident was never about your company.””

My expression changed.

“What?””

“It was about what your father left you.””

The words hit me.

My father.

A man who passed away years ago.

A man who left me a company.

A legacy.

But also something else.

Something I never fully understood.

“What did my father leave me?””

Chad laughed.

“You really don’t know.””

The stranger looked concerned.

“Mr. Carter, there’s something in your father’s original trust documents.””

I stared at him.

“What?””

He opened the folder.

“We found a hidden clause.””

The room waited.

The stranger looked at the paper.

Then at me.

“Your father didn’t leave you control of the company because he wanted you to run it.””

My heart raced.

“Then why?””

He turned the document around.

The words were visible.

*THE INHERITOR MUST IDENTIFY THOSE WHO REMAIN LOYAL WHEN POWER IS REMOVED.*

I stared.

My father knew.

Somehow, he knew.

He had created a test.

A test that only activated when I lost everything.

The wheelchair.

The humiliation.

The people who abandoned me.

It was all connected.

The stranger continued.

“Your father created a protection system.””

I looked at him.

“What kind of system?””

He lowered his voice.

“A system designed to expose anyone trying to steal your inheritance.””

The ballroom went silent.

Then the lights flickered again.

This time, everyone looked nervous.

The main screen turned on.

A live video appeared.

A man was sitting in a dark room.

Adrian.

My brother.

Everyone gasped.

He looked directly into the camera.

Then he spoke.

“Ethan…”

I froze.

Because his voice sounded different.

Not guilty.

Not afraid.

Angry.

“You should have stayed in that wheelchair.””

The entire ballroom went silent.

Adrian leaned closer to the camera.

“Because the moment you stood up…”

He smiled.

“…you exposed yourself.””

The screen went black.

May you like

And beneath it, one final message appeared.

*PHASE TWO HAS BEGUN.*
