Chapter 13: The Final Secret

The voice on the phone stayed silent for a moment.

Almost like the person wanted me to understand the weight of what they were about to say.

I stared at Adrian.

My brother stood in my father’s study, surrounded by memories of a family that no longer felt familiar.

Outside, the SUVs remained parked around the estate.

People were coming.

People who knew exactly where we were.

“Who else betrayed me?”” I asked.

The voice answered calmly.

“Your father.””

My chest tightened.

“What?””

Adrian looked at me.

For the first time, his expression changed.

Not anger.

Fear.

The caller continued.

“You believe your father was protecting you. But he was protecting his legacy.””

I gripped the phone.

“Who are you?””

A pause.

Then:

“Someone who was there when your father made his final decision.””

The call ended.

I looked at Adrian.

“You knew about this.””

He didn’t respond.

That was enough.

Marcus stepped closer.

“Ethan, listen to me.””

I turned.

“I’m tired of listening to everyone.””

My voice was quiet.

“Everyone always has a reason.””

I looked at Adrian.

“You betrayed me because you were jealous.””

I looked at Marcus.

“You hid things because my father asked you to.””

I looked around the room.

“And my father hid things because he thought he knew what was best.””

Nobody spoke.

Because nobody could deny it.

The front door shook.

Someone outside was trying to enter.

Marcus immediately moved toward the hallway.

“We need to leave.””

Adrian didn’t move.

I looked at him.

“Aren’t you afraid?””

He smiled sadly.

“No.””

“Why?””

“Because I know the truth.””

The door opened.

Several people entered.

But they weren’t police.

They weren’t security.

They were lawyers.

At the front was an older woman carrying a folder.

“Ethan Carter?””

I stepped forward.

“Yes.””

She handed me the folder.

“My name is Victoria Hale. I represent your father’s original estate.””

I looked at Marcus.

He looked surprised.

“I thought the documents were gone.””

Victoria shook her head.

“Only hidden.””

I opened the folder.

Inside was a final statement from my father.

Not a letter.

A legal document.

The title made me stop.

*FINAL INHERITANCE REVIEW.*

I read the first line.

*My sons, Ethan and Adrian,*

I looked at Adrian.

Both of us froze.

My father had written to both of us.

*If you are reading this, my greatest fear has happened. My sons have turned against each other.*

Adrian looked away.

I continued.

*Ethan, you believed you inherited everything. Adrian, you believed you inherited nothing. Both of you were wrong.*

My hands tightened around the paper.

The next sentence changed everything.

*The company was never the inheritance.*

Silence.

I looked up.

“What does that mean?””

Victoria answered.

“Your father created a different test.””

I stared.

“What test?””

She opened another document.

“The person who could protect the company without destroying the family would receive control.””

Adrian laughed bitterly.

“So this was another game.””

Victoria looked at him.

“No.””

She shook her head.

“It was a warning.””

She pointed to the document.

“Your father knew power would destroy whoever chased it.””

Adrian’s face changed.

The anger disappeared.

For the first time, he looked like someone who was hearing the truth.

Victoria continued.

“The person who manipulated the situation was not either of you.””

I froze.

“What?””

She placed another photograph on the desk.

A meeting.

A contract.

A third person.

Someone who had been behind everything.

Someone who had used Chad.

Used Brooke.

Used Adrian.

The room became silent.

Because I knew that face.

It was the person everyone thought had disappeared.

My father’s former business partner.

The man who had controlled everything from the shadows.

Marcus whispered:

“Victor Blackwell.””

The name echoed through the room.

Adrian looked at the photograph.

“No.””

I turned toward him.

“You know him?””

Adrian looked terrified.

“He was the one who told me Dad stole from him.””

The pieces finally connected.

Chad wasn’t the mastermind.

Brooke wasn’t the mastermind.

Adrian wasn’t the mastermind.

They were all pieces.

The real player had been watching from the beginning.

Victoria looked at me.

“There is one more thing.””

I stared.

“What?””

She handed me a final envelope.

“This was delivered this morning.””

I opened it.

Inside was a single message.

Not from my father.

From Victor.

*Congratulations, Ethan. You found the truth.*

My blood ran cold.

The next line appeared.

*Now prove you deserve to keep it.*

I looked at the bottom.

A location.

A time.

May you like

And one final sentence.

*Come alone, or everyone you love loses everything.*
