Chapter 3: The Man Who Owned The Ballroom
The ballroom froze.
For one impossible second, nobody moved.
I stood beside the wheelchair, steady and calm, while hundreds of eyes stared at me.
The same people who had looked away minutes earlier were now unable to look anywhere else.
Brooke’s champagne glass slipped slightly in her hand.
Her face lost all color.
“What…?””
The word barely escaped her mouth.
Chad stared at me like he was seeing a ghost.
“That’s not possible.””
I adjusted my jacket.
“Yes, it is.””
The room remained silent.
A few guests exchanged confused looks.
Some looked embarrassed.
Others looked afraid.
Because suddenly, the story they had created about me no longer made sense.
I wasn’t the helpless man they had mocked.
I wasn’t the person Brooke pushed away from the table.
I was the person standing in front of them.
Brooke slowly walked closer.
“You lied to me?””
I looked at her.
“No.””
Her eyebrows tightened.
“You let me believe you couldn’t walk?””
I took a breath.
“I let you believe whatever you wanted to believe.””
Her expression changed.
Because she knew exactly what that meant.
For months, I had watched her actions.
I watched how she spoke to me when she thought I had nothing left.
I watched how quickly she moved on.
I watched how comfortable she became humiliating me.
“You tested me?”” she whispered.
I shook my head.
“No, Brooke.””
I looked around the room.
“I watched you.””
The words hit harder than shouting ever could.
Chad stepped forward.
“You’re making a scene.””
I turned toward him.
“A scene?””
I looked at the empty space where Brooke had pushed my wheelchair.
“The only scene tonight was a room full of people watching someone be humiliated and pretending they didn’t see it.””
Nobody spoke.
Because they knew it was true.
Isabella stood nearby, still holding the empty water glass tray.
She looked at me with surprise, but also respect.
Unlike everyone else, she had treated me the same before knowing anything.
That mattered.
A tall man in a dark suit approached from the back of the ballroom.
His expression was serious.
“Mr. Ethan Carter?””
Everyone turned.
I nodded.
“Yes.””
The man handed me a folder.
Brooke looked confused.
“Who is that?””
I opened the folder.
Inside was a document with a familiar logo.
The logo of the company that owned this entire property.
The ballroom.
The hotel.
The event center.
The place where everyone had gathered tonight.
Chad stepped closer.
“Wait…”
His voice changed.
“No.””
I looked at him.
“You recognize it?””
His face tightened.
Because he knew exactly what he was seeing.
The ownership papers.
The signatures.
The name at the bottom.
Mine.
The ballroom had never belonged to Brooke’s circle.
It had never belonged to Chad’s family.
They were guests in a building I owned.
I closed the folder.
“I invited everyone here tonight.””
A whisper moved through the crowd.
Brooke stared at me.
“Why?””
I looked at the woman who once promised to stand beside me forever.
The woman who abandoned me when she thought I was no longer useful.
“Because I wanted to know who would still respect me when they thought I had nothing.””
Her lips parted.
For the first time all night, Brooke looked afraid.
But I wasn’t finished.
I reached into the folder and pulled out another document.
Chad noticed it immediately.
“What is that?””
I looked at him.
“The reason you two should be very careful about what happens next.””
His face changed.
The confidence disappeared.
Brooke stepped forward.
“Ethan, what does that mean?””
I opened the document slowly.
And before I could say the name written across the page, the ballroom doors suddenly opened.
A man rushed inside holding a phone.
“Mr. Carter, you need to see this immediately.””
Everyone looked at the phone in his hand.
His expression was pale.
May you like
Because whatever was on that screen had changed everything.
And it had something to do with Brooke and Chad.
