Chapter 6: The Person Nobody Expected
The ballroom doors opened slowly.
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
Everyone was waiting.
Waiting to see who Brooke was afraid of.
The person who walked in was not who anyone expected.
It was not another businessman.
Not a lawyer.
Not a stranger.
It was someone who had known me for years.
Someone who had attended my family dinners.
Someone who had hugged me after my accident.
Someone I trusted completely.
My chest tightened.
Because betrayal from enemies was expected.
Betrayal from family was different.
Brooke looked at me.
“I’m sorry.””
I stared at her.
“Sorry for what?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“For not telling you.””
The person who entered the ballroom stopped a few feet away.
The entire room watched.
I couldn’t speak.
My memories started replaying.
Every conversation.
Every piece of advice.
Every moment I ignored the possibility that someone close to me could be the reason my life collapsed.
“You knew?”” I asked.
The person looked down.
That answer hurt more than any confession.
“Yes.””
The room erupted with whispers.
Brooke wiped her tears.
“I found out later.””
I looked at her.
“Later?””
She nodded.
“I was scared.””
“Scared of what?””
She looked at Chad.
Then at the person standing near the door.
“Of what they would do.””
I studied her face.
For months, I wanted answers.
But now that they were arriving, they didn’t feel satisfying.
They felt painful.
Chad crossed his arms.
“This is becoming dramatic.””
I turned toward him.
“You’re the one who created the drama.””
He smiled.
“You think a few documents will destroy me?””
“No.””
I looked at the guests.
“The truth will.””
He laughed.
“You have no idea who you’re dealing with.””
I walked toward the center of the ballroom.
The same place where Brooke had humiliated me earlier.
The same place where everyone had watched silently.
Now everyone was watching for a different reason.
“You’re right.””
I stopped.
“I don’t know everything yet.””
I looked at the evidence.
“But I know enough.””
The man beside me whispered.
“Mr. Carter, there is another file.””
I turned.
“Another?””
He nodded.
“This one was recovered from a hidden account.””
My expression changed.
“What account?””
He handed me the folder.
I opened it.
Inside were photographs.
Messages.
And one document.
The title alone made my heart stop.
Because it was connected to the night of my accident.
I looked at Brooke.
She saw my reaction.
“What is it?””
I didn’t answer.
I couldn’t.
Because suddenly, the accident I thought destroyed my life didn’t look like an accident anymore.
The ballroom became silent.
Everyone waited for me to speak.
I slowly lifted my eyes.
And looked directly at Chad.
“Tell me one thing.””
His smile faded.
“What?””
I held up the document.
“Were you trying to ruin my life…”
I paused.
“…or were you trying to end it?””
Nobody breathed.
Chad’s face changed.
For the first time that night, he looked scared.
And before he could answer, the lights above the ballroom suddenly flickered.
Then every screen in the room went black.
A single message appeared.
One sentence.
May you like
One name.
And everyone in the room turned toward me.
