Chapter 12: The Brother I Never Knew

I barely slept that night.

Every time I closed my eyes, I saw Adrian’s face on the screen.

The same face that smiled at me.

The same face that sat beside me in the hospital.

The same face that told me everything would be okay.

Now I wondered how many times he had lied.

The next morning, I met Marcus at my father’s old estate.

The house had been empty for years.

But walking through those doors felt like entering a place frozen in time.

My father’s books were still on the shelves.

His desk was untouched.

The room smelled like old wood and memories.

Marcus walked toward the fireplace.

“Your father spent his final months here.””

I looked around.

“Planning this?””

Marcus nodded.

“Preparing for what he knew might happen.””

I frowned.

“My father knew Adrian could betray me?””

Marcus didn’t answer.

That silence was enough.

I turned away.

“How long did everyone know except me?””

Marcus looked guilty.

“Your father wanted you to live normally.””

“Normal?””

I laughed.

“My entire life was built on secrets.””

Before he could respond, the front door opened.

I turned.

Adrian walked inside.

Alone.

No security.

No anger.

Just my brother.

For a moment, I saw the person I remembered.

Then I saw the truth.

“Ethan.””

I stared at him.

“Why?””

He looked down.

“I knew you would ask that.””

“Then answer.””

He walked farther into the room.

“Because I spent my entire life watching you get everything.””

I shook my head.

“That’s not true.””

“Isn’t it?””

His voice rose.

“Dad praised you. Investors trusted you. Everyone saw you as the future.””

I stared.

“You were my brother.””

“And I was always second.””

The pain in his voice was real.

But it didn’t excuse what he did.

“You tried to destroy me.””

He looked away.

“I tried to take back what was mine.””

“What was yours?””

He walked toward my father’s desk.

“The company.””

I shook my head.

“Dad gave it to me.””

“No.””

Adrian looked at me.

“Dad gave you control.””

He opened a drawer.

Inside was another document.

“My inheritance was hidden.””

I stepped closer.

“What is that?””

He placed the document on the desk.

“A second trust.””

I read the title.

My expression changed.

Marcus looked shocked.

“This shouldn’t exist.””

Adrian smiled.

“Exactly.””

I looked at him.

“What did you find?””

He stared at me.

“The truth.””

The room became silent.

Adrian pointed at the document.

“Dad didn’t trust either of us.””

My eyes moved across the page.

A hidden clause.

A final condition.

Something neither of us knew.

Marcus stepped forward.

“Ethan, don’t sign anything.””

I looked up.

“I wasn’t going to.””

Adrian smiled.

“Good.””

That confused me.

“What?””

He looked toward the window.

“Because if you refuse…”

A sound came from outside.

Multiple cars arriving.

I turned.

Black SUVs surrounded the estate.

Marcus moved toward the window.

His face changed.

“No.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

He whispered:

“They found us.””

Adrian looked at me calmly.

For the first time, I realized something.

He wasn’t here to negotiate.

He was here because he knew exactly what was coming.

My phone suddenly rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

A familiar voice spoke.

“Ethan.””

I froze.

Because it was the same voice from the night before.

The voice that claimed to know the truth.

“Look outside.””

I did.

The SUVs.

The people approaching.

Then the voice continued:

“Your brother is not the only person who betrayed you.””

My eyes moved back to Adrian.

He looked away.

And that was when I realized…

He wasn’t the biggest secret my family had been hiding.
