Chapter 5: The Woman Behind The Betrayal

The name on the screen stayed there.

I read it again.

And again.

Because my mind refused to accept it.

Brooke noticed my expression.

“Who is it?””

I didn’t answer.

Not yet.

The ballroom waited.

Everyone wanted the secret.

Everyone wanted the truth.

But some truths were heavier when spoken aloud.

The man beside me lowered his voice.

“Mr. Carter, we should discuss this privately.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

I looked around the room.

“For a year, people discussed my life without me.””

My eyes moved across the guests.

“They decided what happened to me. They decided who I became.””

I looked back at Brooke.

“So everyone can hear the truth.””

Brooke looked nervous.

“Ethan…”

I held up the phone.

“The transfer was approved by someone with access to my personal accounts.””

Her face changed.

“What?””

Chad stayed silent.

Too silent.

I noticed.

“You knew.””

His eyes moved toward me.

“I don’t know what you’re talking about.””

“You knew.””

My voice was calm.

That made it worse.

Anger was easier to ignore.

Calm was not.

I turned to the man beside me.

“Show them.””

He connected the phone to the ballroom screen.

The giant display that had been showing charity information suddenly changed.

Now everyone could see the records.

Gasps spread through the room.

The guests who had mocked me were now watching evidence of betrayal.

Several names appeared.

Several dates.

Several payments.

Then the message history appeared.

One message caught everyone’s attention.

A message sent weeks before my accident.

Brooke saw it.

Her hand covered her mouth.

“No…”

I looked at her.

“You didn’t know?””

She shook her head.

“I swear.””

But I had heard promises before.

The hardest part about betrayal was not discovering someone lied.

It was realizing how much time you spent believing them.

I remembered all the moments after my accident.

The hospital room.

The empty chair beside my bed.

The messages that became shorter.

The excuses.

“I’m busy.””

“I need space.””

“You need to focus on yourself.””

All while Chad was getting closer.

Chad suddenly stepped forward.

“You’re twisting this.””

Everyone looked at him.

He pointed at the screen.

“You don’t know the full story.””

“Then explain it.””

He froze.

I waited.

Nothing.

“Explain it, Chad.””

His jaw tightened.

“You think standing up makes you powerful?””

The room went quiet.

There it was.

The real Chad.

Not the charming man from earlier.

Not the wealthy businessman smiling for cameras.

The angry man underneath.

I walked closer.

“Interesting.””

“What?””

“You didn’t ask about the evidence.””

I looked at him.

“You asked about me standing.””

His face changed.

Because he realized his mistake.

I continued.

“You never cared whether I was hurt.””

Silence.

“You cared whether I could still challenge you.””

Brooke looked at Chad.

And for the first time, she looked afraid of him.

“Chad…”

He turned.

“What?””

Her voice shook.

“Did you know about this?””

He didn’t answer.

That was enough.

A few guests whispered.

Brooke stepped back.

“You lied to me.””

Chad laughed.

“Now you care about lies?””

The cruelty in his voice shocked everyone.

Brooke stared at him.

“I defended you.””

“And I gave you everything you wanted.””

The words landed like a slap.

I watched Brooke realize something.

She had thought she was using Chad to escape a difficult future.

But maybe Chad had been using her too.

The man beside me leaned closer.

“Mr. Carter, there’s one more thing.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

He handed me another folder.

“This was found during the investigation.””

I opened it.

Inside was a contract.

My eyes moved down the page.

Then stopped.

Because the signature at the bottom wasn’t mine.

But it was made to look like mine.

Someone had tried to transfer control of my company.

Someone had tried to take everything I built.

And the date of the contract was only days after my accident.

I looked up.

Brooke was staring at the paper.

Her face was filled with fear.

Because she knew something.

Something she had not told me.

“Brooke,” I said quietly.

She looked at me.

“Who helped Chad create this?””

Her lips trembled.

“I…”

She looked toward the ballroom doors.

May you like

Then whispered a name.

A name that made everyone turn.
