Chapter 8: The Letter I Never Sent
The envelope felt heavier than anything I had ever held.
My name was written across the front.
My handwriting.
My signature style.
But I had no memory of creating it.
I looked at the stranger.
“Where did you get this?””
He swallowed.
“From someone who wanted you to find it.””
“Who?””
He looked around the ballroom.
“I can’t say yet.””
Chad laughed nervously.
“This is ridiculous.””
I ignored him.
The envelope was sealed.
I opened it slowly.
Inside was a single piece of paper.
The first line made my breath stop.
*If you are reading this, something happened to me.*
The ballroom disappeared.
For a moment, I wasn’t surrounded by wealthy guests.
I was back in the hospital.
Back in the weeks after my accident.
Back when I thought my entire future had been taken away.
I continued reading.
*I discovered someone close to me was planning to take control of everything I built.*
My eyes moved lower.
*I don’t know who I can trust.*
I stopped.
Because I remembered writing something similar.
Not this letter.
But another one.
During the first weeks of recovery, I had started documenting my concerns.
Then the notebook disappeared.
I looked up.
“Who had access to my office?””
Nobody answered.
Brooke looked away.
Chad looked angry.
The stranger spoke quietly.
“Your office was searched the night before your accident.””
A chill moved through me.
“Who searched it?””
He hesitated.
Then said:
“Your fiancée.””
The room went silent.
Brooke looked horrified.
“No.””
I looked at her.
“Did you go to my office?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Yes.””
The answer hurt.
“Why?””
She looked down.
“Chad told me there were documents there.””
“What documents?””
She didn’t answer.
That was enough.
I stepped back.
The woman who once knew my dreams had become part of the reason I lost them.
“I didn’t know about the accident,” she whispered.
I looked at her.
“But you knew about the plan.””
She cried.
“I thought they were only trying to scare you.””
The stranger spoke.
“That’s what they wanted everyone to believe.””
I turned.
“What do you mean?””
He opened another file.
“The accident was not random.””
The room became silent.
He placed a photograph on the table.
It showed my car.
Taken hours before the crash.
A damaged part was circled.
“The brake system was altered.””
Several guests gasped.
My throat tightened.
For a year, I had blamed myself.
I thought I lost control.
I thought my body failed me.
But someone had tried to make it happen.
Chad suddenly moved toward the door.
Security blocked him.
“Move.””
“No.””
He glared.
“You don’t know what you’re doing.””
I watched him.
“You’re leaving.””
“I’m protecting myself.””
“No.””
I stepped closer.
“You’re running.””
His jaw tightened.
Then Brooke said something unexpected.
“Chad.””
Everyone looked at her.
She wiped her tears.
“Was I part of this?””
Chad stared at her.
For a moment, nobody spoke.
Then he smiled.
A cold smile.
“You really want to know?””
Brooke froze.
“Yes.””
He looked at me.
Then back at her.
“You weren’t part of the plan.””
Her face changed.
“Then what was I?””
His smile widened.
“A distraction.””
The words destroyed her.
She stepped back.
I watched Chad carefully.
Because now I understood.
Brooke had betrayed me.
But she might not have been the person controlling everything.
The stranger reached into the folder again.
“There is one more thing.””
I looked at him.
“What?””
He placed a photograph on the table.
It showed a meeting.
Chad.
Brooke.
And someone else.
Someone standing behind them.
Someone whose face was partially hidden.
But I recognized the watch on their wrist.
May you like
Because I had given that watch as a gift.
To someone I called family.
