Chapter 9: The Truth Beneath The Old Farmhouse
The old Carter farmhouse looked exactly as Daniel remembered.
Broken fence.
Overgrown grass.
A wooden porch that creaked with every step.
It was where his grandfather built the first company office.
Where his father spent his childhood.
Where Daniel learned that family was supposed to mean trust.
Now it felt like a place filled with ghosts.
Daniel parked the car and looked at Lily.
“Stay close to me.””
She nodded.
Victoria followed behind them.
For once, nobody argued.
They all knew the truth was waiting inside.
The key in Daniel’s hand felt heavier than metal.
It felt like a warning.
Inside the farmhouse, dust covered everything.
Daniel walked through the old rooms until he reached his grandfather’s study.
The note had said:
*Where our family began.*
He looked around.
Old desk.
Old books.
Old photographs.
Nothing.
Then Lily pointed.
“Daddy.””
She touched the wall.
“There’s a picture missing.””
Daniel looked closer.
A rectangular mark remained where a frame once hung.
He removed the wooden panel behind it.
A hidden lock appeared.
Victoria whispered:
“Your father…”
Daniel inserted the key.
The door opened.
Inside was a small hidden room.
Files.
Hard drives.
Photographs.
Everything his father had hidden.
Daniel picked up the first folder.
The label made him freeze.
*Richard Carter — Financial Fraud Investigation.*
He opened it.
Bank records.
Transfers.
Proof.
His brother had been stealing from the company for years.
But then Daniel found another folder.
His name was written on it.
*Daniel Carter — Protection Plan.*
He opened it.
Inside were documents dated years ago.
His father had known.
He had known Richard would eventually come for everything.
But there was one final page.
A statement.
Signed by Daniel’s father.
*If Richard attempts to remove Daniel or harm his family, the entire company will be transferred into Lily Carter’s trust.*
Daniel stared.
Lily.
Everything was designed to protect her.
Not him.
Her.
His father knew Lily would be the one person Richard could never control.
Then a sound came from outside.
A car door closing.
Daniel looked toward the window.
Victoria’s face changed.
“No.””
Daniel turned.
“What?””
She whispered:
“He followed us.””
The farmhouse door opened.
Slow footsteps moved through the hallway.
Richard’s voice echoed.
“You always were curious, Daniel.””
Daniel stood in front of Lily.
Richard entered the room.
His eyes moved across the files.
Then he smiled.
“Finally.””
Daniel’s voice was cold.
“This ends now.””
Richard laughed.
“No.””
He looked at Lily.
“This begins now.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“You’re done.””
Richard shook his head.
“You still don’t understand.””
He pulled out a document.
A legal document.
Daniel recognized the signature.
His own.
Richard smiled.
“Because while you were looking for the truth…”
He placed the paper on the table.
“I was making sure nobody would believe you.””
Daniel picked it up.
His face changed.
It was a psychological evaluation.
A report claiming Daniel had become unstable.
Dangerous.
Unfit to raise his daughter.
And at the bottom…
Was his doctor’s signature.
A doctor Daniel had trusted for years.
Richard leaned closer.
“You wanted the truth.””
He smiled.
“Now everyone will see it.””
Daniel stared at the document.
Because he finally understood the real plan.
Richard never wanted to destroy his company first.
He wanted to destroy him.
May you like
And the next person he planned to convince…
Was Lily herself.
