Chapter 13: The Truth Behind The Final Plan

Daniel stared at the photograph.

His mind refused to accept what his eyes were seeing.

His father.

Alive.

Standing beside Victoria.

The date on the photograph was impossible.

Two years after his father’s funeral.

Two years after everyone believed he had died.

Daniel slowly lowered the picture.

“Explain.””

Victoria said nothing.

Her face had lost all color.

“Victoria.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I can explain.””

Daniel’s voice became colder.

“Then do it.””

Thomas looked between them.

“I think it’s time you knew everything.””

Daniel turned toward him.

“You knew?””

Thomas nodded.

“I suspected.””

“You knew my father was alive?””

“No.””

Thomas looked down.

“I knew he wanted the world to believe he was dead.””

The farmhouse became silent.

Lily stood upstairs with a blanket wrapped around her shoulders, watching from the doorway.

Daniel immediately noticed her.

“Lily, go back to your room.””

She shook her head.

“No, Daddy.””

Her voice trembled.

“I want to know.””

Daniel’s heart broke.

She had already carried too many secrets.

But he couldn’t hide the truth anymore.

Thomas placed the file on the table.

“Your father discovered something inside the company that was bigger than Richard’s theft.””

Daniel opened the folder.

Inside were transaction records.

International accounts.

Hidden companies.

Names.

A network.

“What is this?””

Thomas took a breath.

“Your father discovered someone had been using Carter Corporation to move illegal money for years.””

Daniel looked up.

“Who?””

Thomas pointed to one name.

Daniel froze.

Because it wasn’t Richard.

It wasn’t Victoria.

It was a name he had heard his entire life.

A respected businessman.

A family friend.

A man who attended his father’s funeral.

“Charles Whitmore.””

Victoria finally spoke.

“He was your father’s closest partner.””

Daniel looked at her.

“And you knew?””

“I knew your father suspected him.””

“Then why didn’t you tell me?””

Victoria looked down.

“Because your father asked me not to.””

Daniel laughed bitterly.

“So everyone knew except me.””

“No,” Victoria whispered.

“He was trying to protect you.””

Daniel looked at the photograph again.

“By pretending to die?””

Thomas nodded.

“Your father knew if Charles discovered he was alive, everyone connected to him would be in danger.””

Daniel looked at Lily.

“And Lily?””

Thomas opened another document.

“Your father created the trust because he needed someone outside the system.””

Daniel frowned.

“A child?””

“An innocent person.””

Thomas looked at Lily.

“Someone nobody would suspect.””

Lily looked confused.

“Grandpa trusted me?””

Daniel knelt beside her.

“Yes.””

A small tear rolled down her cheek.

“But I couldn’t protect you.””

Daniel hugged her.

“No, sweetheart.””

His voice broke.

“You protected me.””

That night, Daniel sat alone with Victoria.

For the first time in days, they weren’t enemies.

Just two people surrounded by the damage they had helped create.

“Why did you marry me?”” Daniel asked.

Victoria looked at the floor.

“At first?””

“Yes.””

She took a deep breath.

“Because your father asked me to.””

Daniel froze.

“What?””

“He knew Charles was watching everyone close to him.””

Victoria looked up.

“He needed someone near you who could protect you.””

Daniel stared.

“You were assigned to me?””

“Yes.””

The answer hurt more than he expected.

“But then something changed.””

Victoria’s voice softened.

“I fell in love with you.””

Daniel looked away.

“Then why betray me?””

“Because I was afraid.””

“Of what?””

“That if Charles found out I wasn’t helping him, he would destroy you.””

Daniel was silent.

“And Lily?””

Victoria closed her eyes.

“I made the biggest mistake of my life.””

She whispered:

“I thought I could control the situation.””

Daniel looked at her.

“You can’t control people like Charles.””

“I know.””

Then her phone rang.

Both of them froze.

Unknown number.

Victoria answered.

A voice came through.

“You should have stayed quiet.””

Her face changed.

Daniel grabbed the phone.

“Charles.””

A soft laugh came from the other end.

“Daniel.””

The voice was calm.

Almost friendly.

“I’ve waited years for this conversation.””

Daniel tightened his grip.

“You hurt my daughter.””

“No.””

The voice became colder.

“Your daughter was collateral damage.””

Daniel felt rage rising.

“Where are you?””

Another laugh.

“You still think this is about revenge.””

The call ended.

A message appeared.

An address.

May you like

And one sentence.

*Come alone if you want the truth about your father.*
