Chapter 3: The Secret Inside The Safe

The safe had belonged to Daniel’s father.

For years, Daniel believed it only contained old business documents and family memories.

He never had a reason to open it.

Until now.

The photograph inside was faded.

Three people stood together.

His father.

His brother Richard.

And Victoria.

Daniel stared at the picture.

The date written on the back made his stomach turn.

It was taken two years before Daniel and Victoria met.

“Impossible…”

He grabbed the letter underneath.

The handwriting was his father’s.

Daniel read the first line.

“Daniel, if you are reading this, then someone has betrayed you.””

His hands tightened around the paper.

The letter explained that years earlier, his father had discovered financial problems inside the company.

Someone had been secretly moving money.

Someone inside the family.

And before his father could expose the truth, he died.

Daniel read faster.

Then he saw the name.

Richard.

His own brother had been stealing from the company.

But the final paragraph was what made Daniel stop breathing.

“Richard did not act alone.””

Daniel looked again at the photograph.

Victoria’s smile in the picture suddenly looked different.

The woman he married wasn’t someone who joined his life by accident.

She had been connected to his family long before he knew her.

His phone suddenly rang.

It was Mark.

Daniel answered.

“Tell me you found something.””

Mark’s voice was tense.

“I did.””

“What?””

“There’s a second board document.””

Daniel stood still.

“A second one?””

“Yes. The first resolution was only the beginning.””

Daniel looked toward the hallway.

Toward the room where Lily slept.

“What does it say?””

A long pause followed.

Then Mark whispered:

“Mr. Carter… the plan wasn’t to remove you from the company.””

Daniel’s heart raced.

“Then what was it?””

Mark took a breath.

“The plan was to make you look unstable. To prove you were an unfit father.””

Daniel felt cold.

Because suddenly everything connected.

The accusations.

The secret meetings.

The fall.

They didn’t just want his business.

They wanted his daughter.

Before Daniel could respond, he heard a sound behind him.

A floorboard creaking.

He turned.

Victoria stood in the doorway.

Watching him.

Her expression was calm.

Too calm.

“How much did you hear?”” Daniel asked.

Victoria smiled.

“Enough.””

Daniel stepped between her and the hallway leading to Lily’s room.

For the first time, Victoria looked uncertain.

“Daniel…”

“No.””

His voice was quiet.

But firm.

“You don’t get to walk into my daughter’s life and destroy it.””

Victoria stared at him.

Then she said something that made his blood run cold.

“You still think Lily is the only secret in this house?””

Daniel froze.

“What does that mean?””

Victoria reached into her purse.

She pulled out a small envelope.

And placed it on the table.

“Open it.””

Daniel didn’t move.

“What is it?””

Victoria looked at him.

“The truth about why your father never trusted Richard.””

Daniel slowly picked up the envelope.

Inside was a document.

A document with Lily’s name written at the top.

And beneath it was a sentence that would change everything Daniel believed about his own family.

“This child is not who you think she is…”
