Chapter 8: The Hidden Room

Daniel didn’t sleep.

Not even for a minute.

He stayed outside Lily’s bedroom until sunrise, sitting in the hallway with his back against the wall.

Every sound made him look up.

Every shadow made his hand move toward his phone.

When Lily woke up, she found her father there.

“Daddy?””

Daniel forced a smile.

“Good morning, princess.””

She looked at him.

“You slept here?””

He nodded.

“I wanted to make sure you were safe.””

Lily hugged her stuffed rabbit.

“Are you mad at me?””

Daniel frowned.

“Why would I be mad?””

“Because I didn’t tell you about the papers.””

Daniel sat beside her.

“Lily, listen to me.””

He gently held her hand.

“You never have to be scared to tell me the truth.””

“But Mommy said…”

Daniel stopped.

“What did Mommy say?””

Lily looked down.

“She said grown-up problems are too heavy for little girls.””

Daniel felt his heart ache.

“She was wrong.””

Lily looked at him.

“Daddy?””

“Yes?””

“Grandpa knew something bad would happen?””

Daniel became still.

“What makes you say that?””

“Because he gave me something.””

Daniel leaned closer.

“What did he give you?””

Lily looked around the room.

Then she walked toward her bookshelf.

She pulled out a small wooden box hidden behind her books.

Daniel recognized it immediately.

It belonged to his father.

“How did you get that?””

Lily touched the box.

“Grandpa gave it to me before he died.””

Daniel’s eyes widened.

“He did?””

She nodded.

“He said only give it to Daddy when someone tries to take everything away.””

Daniel slowly opened the box.

Inside was a small key.

The same kind Victoria had shown him.

But there was something else.

A handwritten note.

Daniel unfolded it.

His father’s words appeared.

*Daniel, if this reaches you, trust no one who says they are protecting you.*

Daniel’s heart raced.

He continued reading.

*The truth is hidden where our family began.*

Below that was an address.

Daniel recognized it.

The old Carter family property.

The abandoned farmhouse where his grandfather started the company decades ago.

Before Daniel could leave, Victoria appeared at the doorway.

She looked at the box.

“You found it.””

Daniel turned.

“You knew about this?””

“No.””

She looked at the note.

“I knew your father had a backup plan.””

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because Richard was watching everything.””

Daniel studied her face.

He still didn’t trust her.

But he saw something different.

Fear.

Real fear.

“Why should I believe you?””

Victoria swallowed.

“Because Richard is coming here.””

Daniel frowned.

“What?””

“He knows Lily has the key.””

A sound came from downstairs.

The front door opening.

Daniel looked toward the hallway.

“Who is that?””

Victoria whispered:

“Richard.””

Daniel moved instantly.

He stepped in front of Lily.

A few seconds later, Richard appeared.

Calm.

Perfectly dressed.

Almost like nothing had happened.

“Daniel.””

Daniel stared at him.

“You shouldn’t be here.””

Richard smiled.

“I came to check on my niece.””

“You’re not going near her.””

Richard’s smile faded.

“You really think you understand what’s happening?””

Daniel stepped closer.

“I know enough.””

Richard looked at Lily.

“Sweetheart, do you still have what Grandpa gave you?””

Lily moved closer to Daniel.

“No.””

Richard’s eyes narrowed.

A dangerous silence followed.

Then he said:

“You’re lying.””

Daniel’s expression hardened.

“How do you know?””

Richard didn’t answer.

And that was the moment Daniel realized something.

May you like

Richard didn’t just know about the key.

He knew exactly where Lily had hidden it.
